Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is pointing to a malware attack on its servers for why it hasn’t been able to share important travel information with customers since Monday morning.

The authority began investigating technical issues over the weekend, later bringing in the FBI and outside information technology experts for help. SEPTA shut down real-time data like its “Next-to-Arrive” feature Monday to mitigate problems, and also halted employee email as well as access to payroll and remote timekeeping. An investigation is ongoing, according to SEPTA.

Riders noted problems Monday morning and sought answers from SEPTA’s social media account on why they weren’t able to load real-time data, leaving them guessing as to when to expect vehicles. Frustrations continued into Tuesday.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority is recovering from a reported cyberattack that resulted in the Philadelphia-area transit agency shutting down its real-time bus and rail information for two weeks, exasperating customers returning to the service’s lines after a pandemic-induced slump.

The incident, which was reported Aug. 10, involved an unnamed form of malware that infected SEPTA’s networks, including systems that advise riders when the next train or bus is arriving.
The agency also said at the time that the attack did not expose any customer data connected to its automated fare cards.

Real-time train and bus information was finally restored Monday, SEPTA said, but the Philadelphia Inquirer reported the effects of the reported cyberattack run much deeper at the agency. According to the Inquirer, the attack also caused SEPTA employees to lose access to their email accounts, phone directories and multiple file servers, with little indication of when those systems might be restored.

SEPTA has yet to fully restore operations stifled by a malware attack that has exasperated employees and prompted assistance from the FBI.

The August attack caused the authority to halt access to employee email and stop sharing real-time travel information with riders. It also disrupted routine scheduling practices on SEPTA’s Customized Community Transportation Connect, or CCT.
But after months, SEPTA employees still can’t get to files on shared drives or gain internet access at its headquarters in Center City.

The authority is “going inch-by-inch on purpose," as it scans for evidence of malware, said Gino Benedetti, SEPTA general counsel who is overseeing SEPTA’s recovery from the attack. There is no timeline on a complete restoration.

“Our IT team continues to work diligently to fully restore and improve our network, safeguard personal information and security of our IT systems, and build a better system for the future,” she said.
