    Hi Opaida

Would it not be better to check "internally" if a file is executable or not.
That is how AE 2.2 works for example
Otherwise "malware.tmp" could just be downloaded and ran ?

If it could do that would be a perfect program.

Malware still needs permission to run. PE Guard simply adds a layer of protection by allowing the user to specify if an executable file should run on his computer.

I have PE Guard on one of my laptops which runs XP Pro and I'm starting to become impressed with it. Plays nicely with Sandboxie and SRP. I do wish I understood more completely exactly what PE Guard does do or how it functions. It seems to be more than just an anti-executable or a HIPS variation. Time will tell I suppose. Looking forward to version two.

    Later....

    PE GUARD V1.2

    Hi,
after reading Joeythedude post, I decided to write a new version.
So, I've finished the ver 1.2.
Now I am testing it, I think it will take three days to publish it.

    What's new?
    1. You can now save the safe processes in c:\pegconfig.ini.
    2. There is a new restriction on renaming an PE file.
    3. The countdown timer will stop when a mouse moves over the alert window.
    4. The alert will appear faster than before.
    5. Bug Fixes.
    6. H1N1 protection :D.

Also, I added a special thank to wilders' member :).

Safe processes are identified by process name or PID?

No there is no beta version, because I didn't change the main architecture of the program.

safe processes are identified by its exe's full path.;)

    Re: pe guard v1.2

    Nice work.
    Good news. Works as advertised.
    Note: the pegconfig,ini file states:
Could be misleading to some. Safe processes included must not prefix with the "#" ("REM").
As such, the .ini file serves as a crude "rules" editor. Thanx.
Note: No option for install to directory other than the default C:?

PS: The recognition to Wilders' members in the install screen is a courteous touch.

See the "readme.rtf" in the zip file.

    Regards

    Re: pe guard v1.2

Thank you Opaida, this is a great application with a small footprint!

I have just one more request:
Would it be possible for you to have the driver peg.sys install to the peguard folder (instead of windows/system32/drivers)
and also the config file pegconfig.ini install to the peguard folder also (instead of the windows/system32 folder).
This would really make peguard easy to keep together on a usb stick or even uninstall cleanly on a hard drive simply by deleting the peguard folder. I hope you will consider this in the future.
    Many thanks.

    Re: pe guard v1.2

Apparently, the original "pegconfig.ini" installs to the windows/system32 folder.
Subsequent editing of same results in "pegconfig.ini" file saved to OPS\PE GUARD folder.
(Once the "pegconfig.ini" has been edited it is saved / introduced into the OPS\PE GUARD folder.)
Deleting the original windows/system32 "pegconfig.ini" seems not to affect the proggie.
    Cannot comment on the peg.sys.

    Cheers

I noticed this too. Having it in peguard folder to begin with would "cut out the middle man" in a way.
Hope opaida comes by soon to have his say.

    Hi
"System32\pegconfig.ini" was there because I had forgotten to modify some keys in the installation package. Anyway, now I did some changes as a respond to your suggestions:
    1. now, pegconfig.ini in the installation dir.
    2. now, peg.sys in the installation dir.
    3. you can change the default destination dir.
    4. after installing PEG, you can run it whenever you want (portable).

I tried to upload it to my free hosting page, but I couldn't because the control panel is down .
