    When I update PDFXCE it always changes itself to the default PDF program and also makes itself the default thumbnail handler, even though both settings are set to "No" and "Do not change" in the File Association settings. Does this happen to anyone else? I asked on the PDFXCE forum but just got a lot of lame runaround answers. These are the only settings it doesn't respect when updating.

    file extensions are handled by windows*, not programs. if you set "yes" in pdf-x then it will open the windows options.

    *windows 10/11, any other is discarded.

    The settings I'm talking about are located in the "File Association" area but they don't really have a lot to do with file associations. One is the default program option and the other is thumbnail handler.

    So the setting in picture is not steady for you?
    so, this issue is not new, for some users it wont stay on set program and resets to default (which is obviously Edge). but i never had.
    maybe you should uninstall pdf-x, clean up, and re-install.

    and this is no issue for pdf-x, its a windows issue, trust me.

    i would like to help but this type of issue is very difficult to resolve. and in most cases it need to be working in the device itself, so sorry. it may be a difference to work with windows home or pro (here: only pro). settings in the program which is set as default, tuners and more, maybe security software which may intercept. so many variables not beeing common.

    hint: i am using pdf-x (any of them) as portable and have set a registry entry to it. you may try it. may help as .REG file
    Code:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pdf]
    @="PDF-XChangeEditor"
    "PerceivedType"="document"
    "Content Type"="application/pdf"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pdf\OpenWithList\PDF-XChange Editor.exe]
    @=""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/pdf]
    "CLSID"=-
    "Extension"=".pdf"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\PDF-XChange Editor.exe]
    "FriendlyAppName"="PDF-XChange Editor"

    windows may ask when opening PDF files, but onyl once with the proper choice at that dialog.

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\PDF-XChange Editor.exe\shell\open]
    @="Öffnen mit PDF-&XChange Editor"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\PDF-XChange Editor.exe\shell\open\command]
    @="\"drive:\\folder\\PDF-XChange Editor.exe\" \"%1\""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\PDF-XChange Editor.exe]
    "FriendlyAppName"="PDF-XChange Editor"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\PDF-XChange Editor.exe\shell\open]
    @="Öffnen mit PDF-&XChange Editor"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\PDF-XChange Editor.exe\shell\open\command]
    @="\"drive:\\folder\\PDF-XChange Editor.exe\" \"%1\""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeEditor]
    @="PDF-XChange Editor Dokument"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeEditor\DefaultIcon]
    @="drive:\\folder\\PDF-XChange Editor.exe,0"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeEditor\shell]
    @="open"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeEditor\shell\open]
    @="Öffnen mit PDF-&XChange Editor"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeEditor\shell\open\command]
    @="\"drive:\\folder\\PDF-XChange Editor.exe\" \"%1\""

    USA still the best. But barely.
    I have 11P & it won't let go being Edge the default for PDFs. Is this what the REG file does? If not what's it do? Thanks.

    The new version adds "Black & White" to Convert Colors. Haven't had a chance to test it, but if it does what I think it will that'll be a great addition. Hopefully it can convert to true B&W, not just grayscale.

    Yes, the new version absolutely does convert to true B & W (not grayscale). In my test, some of the images didn't look that great compared with FineReader; but I may just need to tweak some settings. The text looked outstanding!
