Lets move on from parental control... See, I have big problem with similar kind of testing methodology. If you have a system infected with hundreds of malware/virii specimens, in real life (TM) you go and reformat the drive and reinstall from scratch (or restore a safe image if you are smart enough to have one) - simply because that system can no longer be trusted no matter how much you disinfect it!

Any value in such attempts is limited to actual data rescue in case you don't have an uptodate backup of your data.

    IOW, prevention >> detection/removal.

What you say has value for probably professionals and corporate users. The ol' Mom n Pop users are basically clueless about backup. And even if a clean backup is available, I can tell you by experience that most clients have a hell raising fear of the word *FORMAT*.... So I definitely need a AV that does a good job of cleaning a heavily infested system...

Another thing, in the PC Mag review I don't think they used the Rescue Disk to clean the infested system. It looks like they boot into Safe Mode and try and clean... Guess, Neil forgot to see the rescue disk feature (intentionally or not , thats debatable;) ).
I can't think of any malware sample, that Kaspersky won't be able to remove when running off the rescue disk, since the damn malware is not running in background creating issues. Right ?

Sure thats what I do. But that doesn't make KIS 2009 any better, now does it ?
The fact remain, KIS 2009 anti-phishing is weak (period)
PC Mag also found the same, so this part of there review is correct (period)
So if you use KIS 2009, logically you should have some additional tool for protection for phishing. So you can use IE/FF/Toolbars, your choice.

Well, with similarly plague-infested systems, I'd definitely start with booting from a rescue CD and disinfecting from there first, even before actual AV install. Eliminates lots of issues. Can cause a bunch of nasties to be missed if the detection relies on them being active, but otherwise - much better approach than trying a basically unsupported AV install from safe mode. :thumb:

Agreed. In KIS 2009 you can now create a XP PE builder based Rescue CD or download the linux based Rescue CD from Kaspersky site.
Not using the available feature, seriously shows the flaws in PC Mag testing.

    PC-Mag got pwnd :thumbd:

What build were you using? Have you tried 454? I myself had some browsing slowdown using build 357 but ONLY with Web Traffic protection was set to maximum. Now with build 454 there is no or not noticeable slowdown at all, with all settings to max-

Yes, the phishing protection may not be very good, However nowadays almost every windows user uses a browser with phishing protection(IE, Firefox and Opera), Safari is the only browser which doesn't have phishing protection. So I think normally Kaspersky's list of phishing website which is updated daily with the browser's anti phishing function should take care of most of the stuff.

Definitely the Rescue Disk could be needed for heavily infected systems, but I have used KAV 2009 on a lot of infected systems(one had around 150,000 infections) and never had a problem removing. Sometimes, I went in safe mode and there were some infections that Kaspersky couldn't remove. However, I noticed that at the next reboot in normal mode those infections were in fact completely gone!

What a pity - how could you clean such masterpiece, malware collectors dream! How could you... Should have shippped that box to Redmond instead, speaks volumes about security of their OS. :D

They were worms, trojans, some vundo variants, some adware and some other nasty stuff...
The user used that computer without antivirus for a year, he was a porn addict, and didn't bother asking himself why there were so many popups.:argh:

Lol I even wanted to make a video of that computer but I couldn't install any screen recorder

It's quite a pity that the current KIS2009 has no Kaspersky rescue disc available...

I am not a disc creator... It would be nice if Kaspersky would have their own disc. Just like Avira has, for instance.

It's obvious PCMag never liked vendors besides Norton.

And for some reason, if the system is not bootable or you are unable to create the PE builder based Rescue CD in Kaspersky. You can also download the Linux Based CD from their site ( Note: The image keeps changing as new malware definations are added to the Linux Image, since it doesn't have auto-update capability).

In case you missed it, I am adding the screen shot too from one of my systems running KIS 2009.

    Hope that helped.

It seems KIS has now stopped support for their linux based pre-baked Rescue CD, since it was being bootlegged.

If you want the KAV 2008 based CD is available for download at:

    I have seen such numb-chucks too !!
One such fella, was a teen who had a separate desktop comp. given to him for his STUDYS... But the kid, surfed boldly where at his age he should not have gone. Got infected by many many malware including MyDoom, which infected the laptop of the father via backdoor.
Later on analysis we found that a certain computer was using 3127 port to re-infect again & again. Go to the source and its spanking time for the kid !! :D

True, but this incident happened in 2004-05 I think.
Back in those days, most people had AV with no spyware protection. And firewall was only for the security paranoid ....

Now atleast you have decent suites or combo with all types of malware protection and firewall in most homes. So chances of such magnitude of infection can be only due to the lack of brain cells...

But I must say, the kids these days are getting sharp. They always seem to find some loop-holes to surf what they want. The only thing you can do is make sure you have a quality security solution to cleanup, bcoz kids will sooner or later have their way...
