Recently i have had loads of adverts poping up in internet explorer. Most of the adverts seem to be relevant to the page i'm on. for example: if i went on an mp3 site then the adverts would be about mp3 offers etc. But the sites i go on never used to have pop up ads on them but they do now. i read somewhere that i could have a parasite installed on my pc without me knowing. so does anyone know how i can detect and remove such parasites?
And off the subject: my pc has been crashing much more than it has ever done before recently. can anyone give me some things to check for on my pc please?

    adcyork, and welcome.

Please follow the instructions (Steps 1 & 2) over here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=15913

Then create a folder on your C: drive and unzip HijackThis into it. Do not put HijackThis in the Temp folders or on your Desktop as backups there will be easily lost. Once HijackThis is in it's own folder, double-click the HijackThis.exe file to open the program, then click the "Scan" button. Once the scan is finished, the Scan button will change into a "Save Log" button. Save the log and open it in Notepad, then copy and paste ALL the contents of the log here in a post

Please do NOT fix anything in HijackThis until advised by an Expert. Most of what it lists will be harmless and even essential to your computer's operation.

I will move your post to the adware/spyware/hijack cleaning forum where someone will be happy to review your log.

    Regards,

    snap

    Hi adcyork,

First, please create a permanent folder on your C drive (call it Hijackthis if you like), and move the HijackThis.exe file into it. HijackThis creates backups in the folder it is ran from, so you will want to keep them in one folder so they do not get lost if we need to put anything back.

    Next, download CWShredder.
    You will need it shortly.

Then make sure you have all files and folders viewable as some of the files you will have to delete later may be hidden:
How to Show Hidden Files and Folders

Then open Hijackthis, and place a check beside following items.
Close ALL browsers/windows (except HijackThis), and click *Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://server224.smartbotpro.net/7search/?new-hkcu

Without rebooting yet, unzip CWShredder.exe, open and run the program by clicking the "Fix" button (not "scan only").
Make sure ALL browsers are closed, and follow the prompts you receive when the program runs.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key just before windows begins to load.

    Find and delete the following:
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\XUPITER <--entire folder
    C:\Program Files\GMSoft <--entire folder
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\A.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BRIDGE.DLL <--it may be gone but look for it just in case.
    c:\windows\temp\msbb.exe

    Reboot your computer normally.

I am not finding any information on this file: C:\WINDOWS\wrabmv.exe
It may be something new. Could you navigate to the file, zip up a copy of it and submit it to Pieter Arntz for analysis.
You can find his email addy in his Profile, Here (scroll down and look under Additional Information)
Include a brief message and a link back to this thread so he will be able to find it easily. Thank you.

Then upload the wrabmv.exe file for a scan at Kaspersky.
If the scan comes back with a report that it is infected, then delete the file (but after you've emailed a zipped copy to us please)

I would suggest you uninstall the MessengerPlus2 as it comes bundled with LOP. You can remove it through the Add/Remove Programs.

With that dialer being on there, it would also be a good idea to do an on-line scan. You can find free on-line antivirus scanners here: Free Services

Do another scan with HijackThis and post a new log here in this thread to be checked. Include the scan results from Kaspersky.

    Regards,

    snap

Some more detailed information on the dialler:

    Hi adcyork,

It would have been great to have had the wrabmv.exe file though. Did you 'unhide' all files and folders as posted above in my first post? Maybe CWShredder zapped it or the on-line scan did.

Your log is clean. Is everything running ok now?

    Regards,

yes. everything is running fine. But i just have one problem left. when i click start then shut down and then click ok at the box that says: "what do you want your computer to do now?" after i selected the shut down option. the computer begins to shut down and the desktop disappears as it should do. but then all i get after that is a black/blank screen that has a _ symbol that is white flashing in the top left corner and then the pc does not carry on shutting down. it just stays like that untill you press the power button in for 10 seconds and shut it down manually. but then it does a scan disc the next time you start it up. do you know any way i could solve this?

oh and i have had a problem with selling items on ebay and playing a game called trials bike pro on http://www.miniclip.com/trialbikepro.htm in particular but some other sites/games have this problem. when i go on any of these things the pc just crashes and goes onto a blue screen with option of pressing any key to continue or ctrl + alt + delete to restart. could you suggest anything that could cause this? maybe a program/application that the things use?

    Hi adcyork,

The shutdown issue with a Windows ME computer can involve either a software conflict or hardware troubles, or both. It may take you some reading and research to narrow down what could be causing it. A good place to start would be at this link: How to Troubleshoot Windows Me Shutdown Problems.

I don't know why your computer would be crashing at that site you posted, but there may be something there that isn't agreeing with your computer if it's crashing it. I think if a site crashed my computer, I wouldn't be going back there, and would definitely scan after such a crash to see if anything was installed on the computer without my knowledge. ;)

For the shutdown issues, you may get better response from knowledgable members here, if you posted your question over in our General Software and Services Forum.

    Regards,

    snap
