It was winclone or the partition resizer by Paragon that essentially caused issues with the NTFS partition in bootcamp. This also caused windows to forget the partition layout after every major OS update: vista to 7 and 7 to 8. I don't recall if 8.1 was affected. I ended up rebuilding bootcamp from scratch and not using either program. In the end, I did not want to risk reproducing the problem due to military deployments. I assume the VMDK mounter is to actually mount the backup image. I assume your problem lies in the partition itself, something chkdsk cannot fix. If you ever used a partition utility, that could be the culprit. I recommend backing up all your data, wipe bootcamp, then rebuild bootcamp from scratch like I did. Too much technical tweaking is causing problems. For the developers: I'm still backing up my drive to the NTFS NAS...about 60% done after the restart. Time elapsed: 21:50 for 300GB initial backup.
