    Re: Cloud AV

You're reading a REALLY old post, right? Think I remember that one by now too... it's also been said over and over back there that PCAV will ALWAYS be free.

Hello raven  I know, but what the hell does "the free version will have less security" mean? Maybe the Panda should clarify this old statement :)

To answer both of you (:D), there was a mistake in the help-file (online) which I also hang up on for a while till getting the facts, which is that there will only be one PCAV - the one which we're using today - and that it'll be free forever.

    Hope this helps.

No questions are dumb - there are only stupid answers. That statement is actually true IMO. ;)

You could absolutely use it alone on the malware front IMO - I mostly use things like hardening and stuff that's not additional security software on my system (e.g. OpenDNS). It very much depends on your surfing habits. If you're a risky surfer, consider adding sandboxing software, which can be obtained for free (SandboxIE, GeSWall, etc.).

    Hope this helps. ;)

    Cheers!

I cant wait until beta 3. beta 2 is somewhat stable but there minor bugs and glitch, which is normal.

i wish they would give us a roadmap of upcoming plans they have in mind.

    What about automatic program upgrades:

    What about self protection:

    It sounds promising :)

There's a known issue with Beta2's BackgroundScan and the Synchronous OnAccess scan which can result in the problem you are experiencing. Check the following URL for a workaround until Beta3 comes out:
    http://blog.cloudantivirus.com/2009/07/21/known-issue-with-beta2-synchronous-background-scan/

With version 1.0 there will be only a FREE version (no PRO version). We are thinking of adding more functionalities in the future and maybe release a pro version later on (but always maintaining the FREE version with the current & more functionalities). This is not fully defined as of yet, and the pro functionalities would be limited to things along the line of VIP support, automatic instead of manual upgrades to new versions, etc. The idea is that the FREE version always includes all protection technologies by default and for free of course.

Beta3 is due out in mind-late September. That's the date we're shooting for even though its not final. Beta3 will have support for 32/64bits Vista & Windows7, fixes for most issues found during Beta1 and Beta2 and a few other things.
After that we'll release version 1.0, hoping before end of year :)

With automatic updates to new versions vs. manual - can the user still update to a new version through the program (e.g. notification, the user confirms), or is it limited so that the user has to instead uninstall the old version, and so on, and so on? :doubt:

Yes you'll be able to update through the program... notification, download, install on top with no manual uninstall required.

Thats good to hear and i wouldnt mind not having auto updates for programs but would want it for def updates. will that be possible.

and it really makes me happy to see that there wouldnt be any protection cut from the pro vs free

Yes I was refering to complete new versions (upgrades) only. Updates of the collective intelligence cache signatures are automatic and transparent always :)

Just thought about something about the cache... In a blog-post it was mentioned the cache is holding information about something like 4-5 Million pieces of malware or so - (1) how can that many entries not affect performance, and (2) is that what provides the offline protection of PCAV?

Regarding affecting performance, of course it does, but not as much as a sig file holding detections for over 26 million samples (which is what we're up to currently). The sig size, which has a very direct impact in memory consumption, is reduced to 10% of what it used to be.

Regarding the offline protection, as a matter of fact the cache plays an important part, but not the only one. There's also a local heuristic engine that provides proactive detection of new variants. Also in this respect we'll be adding more technology in future versions to protect during offline operation, specifically behavioral technologies and script/policy blocks.

Okay, sounds great. So the cache should only affect the RAM usage, or CPU cycles as well? If only RAM it's no problem since any system today - even very cheap - often come with at least 2 Gigs of ("value") RAM. ;)

Will the local heuristics and such be downloaded automatically by the software from your C.I., or are new heuristics, etc. provided through new versions? I'm asking this since I'm not sure if new versions will be a fast enough way. :) BTW, these are just thoughts since I dunno your planned frequency of product updates. ;)

Actually Panda CloudAV has 2 types of heuristics:
    1. Locally installed. Updated via program upgrades (manual in FREE version) and plugin upgrades (automatic in all versions).
    2. Cloud heuristics. Always up-to-date as the determination is delivered over the Internet.

    1. Full-scan stops at 3842 items / 5% - what do you want me to do so that you can analyze what's wrong?

    2. Just wanted to mention that some moments later, PSANHost.exe would use up ALL of my CPU (yes, not just one core even), forcing me to shutdown the process. Would that be related to the Background scanning-issue, as it didn't care a thing about how idle I was or anything?
