I didn't count them .If you do a manual update with Panda AV,it shows you
in a screen, the number of new signatures added plus the total amount of signatures.

an av vendor told me at vb that marx will do a test soon for a big german magazine. so i would not call it random or unannounced.

These tests done by both Marx and Clementi are pretty useless as a representation of the real-world. By copy the malware to the disk and scanning it you bypass several layers of protection like drive-by download detection, IPS, behavioral etc. I can tell you that in a head-to-head test of drive-by protection between KIS07 and NIS08, NIS08 will clearly win (based on what I have seen), but both the Andreas dont test that. So whats the point of their test.

do you realise you are speaking with Andreas? :shifty:

but yes, i do agree that these tests have no effect about any real world threats, with no real fault to the testers though.

thats just the way it is i suppose. :D

I can't speak for Marx, but I guess they will start already at the begin of 2008.
We will start later, as we first have to increase our resources and expand our office & team to be able to do that as good as possible.

Thats good to know. Once the Dynamic testing has received acceptance, I can see this developing into another controversy. How does the tester use dynamic testing to truly reflect the real-world. After all what is the real-world ?
    - are most users getting infected through drive-by ? If the tester believes thats the case and gives a higher weight to drive-by protection then Norton will win.
    - are most users getting infected through email attachments ? If so, then Zone might win because they rename every email attachment
    - are most users getting infected through opening exes coming through non-email methods like codecs, cracks, warez, links to exes in email etc. If so, then Kaspersky might win.

Either way, no matter how the "new improved" dynamic testing is done, it can be challenged by the security vendors as not being a reflection of the real world. So the tester is going to have to figure out how users are mostly getting infected and be able to back up that claim.

I do not see this problem, as the test results will be described in detail. What at the end matters is the PROTECTION of the PC, not how or at which level the threat was stopped.
In forums etc. I use the nickname IBK, to do not cause confusions (and also because in forums i want to be able to give my personal opinion without that it gets automatically taken as official statement from av-comparatives).
