I second that! I would find such a thing extremely helpful as well.

    To guest:

You can also add ShadowDefender: http://www.shadowdefender.com/ to Virtualization

I just bought a DW license and also second that! Perhaps some indication on the application icon? (check mark if trusted?

Yes, such the indication is within my roadmap for DW. I just can't do everything in one piece. First- skin engine migration. Then- outbound protection.

That it is. I love it, I use it. But I do question some off the apps on the list in terms of their 'newbie friendliness.'

Autoruns, LoadOrder, Process Explorer, TCPView and a lot more useful tools.

Again, I'm questioning this thread. At this rate you'll be doing nothing but adding every tool that there is out there, with no regard to whether or not it is 'newbie' friendly. If that is your intention there is no point to continuing. Products like Promomitron, Runscanner, HiJackThis!, any of the classical HIPS, or the system hardeners shuld not be listed as there are intended only for people that know what they are doing. In fact, you would be doing a disservice listing them as 'newbie' friendly products; users can easily dop serious damage to their systems without experience and/or prior knowledge. Again, these aplications are not for the innexperienced.

The problem is you are supposing that the list is for newbies, and the list is for all the useful security apps.

If you want to participate, please tell me in your opinion what apps are for EXPERTS and i will edit the post. We can add all the information that we want we can do a spreadsheet, a web...

Some time ago i was thinking in make a blog or a web about security with the people of wilders if somene is interested...pm

    Thanks

I seriously don't see what's there for experts with stuff like Secunia PSI (there's absolutely zero chance you could mess up anything) or the removal tools (huh, if you know what you need to remove, you download the appropriate app, if you don't know, well then there's no point in downloading those in the first place).

That's why they have been removed. All system 'hardeners' should be used by those only with experience.

SSM should definitely be for experienced users at the least. If a user put it on it's paranoid settings, then blocked the wrong process, they could lock themselves out of their computer completely.

I do not believe DefenseWall shuold be listed as 'expert only'. That is why it was not included. I think it is pretty self-explanatory. But, by all means add if you disagree.

    n8chavez,
Sorry. I misunderstood what you were saying.
DW seems to work well for beginners.

I can't comment on other HIPS. Haven't used them. SSM is not an app the casual user will be able to handle.

Regarding Proxomitron, its not a app that can harm your system. The worst it will do is make webpages inaccessible. That can be fixed by anyone by clicking on its bypass button. Its default filters are pretty decent and will remove a lot of unwanted content, but a knowledgeable user can do much more with it. Proxomitron shows its power in the hands of a user with knowledge of html, javascript, etc, one who can configure it to filter exactly the way they want it. Not dangerous, but not for the inexperienced. Just the most powerful web content filtering software available.

Correct. It will not harm your system. However, in order to get the most out of it the user will need to have a good knowledge of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). It's for this reason that I said it was for advanced users.
