I thought it was a vpn for the browser only with traffic encrypted ? If so, surely this trumps http proxies ?

Come to think of it, I wonder how this is linked to the selling of opera to a Chinese consortium of which Qihoo 360 is a member?

    Thoughts?

You're welcome :) Although some diminish their effort, Opera has always been pioneering among browsers and they pursue this tradition.

Very true. They never seemed to gain market share for some reason. Shame.

Using Opera is not "sticking it" to the man, or alt. enough. That's Firefox. Because nothing says "I'm a non-conformist rebel" or "Spelunking in the Dark Web, yo" than using Firefox (even though it's been mainstream for years).

(And Opera has been associated with hipsters, for some reason?!)

It is a browser VPN. But you know some people just like to nitpick.

It's an interesting feature, but does it slowdown browsing? And too bad that Opera still sucks, I've just installed it after one year, but it still has the same annoyances. No option to put tabs on bottom, the bookmarks manager isn't good enough, and for some reason it still wants to load the Opera Updater and Crashreporter.exe process. I can name a couple of more things, but why bother. Opera is a closed book for me, but I wonder if others will also start offering a VPN.

No idea, I can't even connect to it (never could, from the very first beta).

Anyway, sounds like you should give Vivaldi a try. It's still too "green" for me, though.

LOL, that's weird. I hope others can give some feedback about the VPN. And I already tried Vivaldi, it gives you more customization options and has less annoyances. It only needs a couple of tweaks and fixes here and there.

I've been playing with the VPN in Opera Developer since version 38. I haven't tested it for speed, I'm more concerned about leakage. It is nicely implemented but I wouldn't fully trust it as a VPN per se but it works far better than any of the VPN plugins like Zengate which are encrypting proxies at best. In theory that is what any VPN connection from just one browser will be. That being said, the Opera VPN works quite well and passes a basic leak test. Opera Developer has a separate configuration folder from the stable version and I've been running Opera stable with my regular IP and Opera Developer for on the fly VPN use when I just want to use a different IP for a short time and I'm not overly concerned about leakage. It is convenient but not as secure as running a VM with OpenVPN.

Sure but Opera primarily focuses on the wider population (with their Chromium browser), not IT geeks. And for that group the VPN what they offer is the perfect solution, imo. 2 million new users in a week speaks for itself.

I've read reports that surfing speed goes down significantly, that's why I never bothered with VPN's. I've also read that the Opera VPN is probably logging quite a lot of stuff, including visited sites.

Network speed is reduced about 10% on a typical VPN connection. On free VPNs, there are often bandwidth limitations. I don't know about Opera which is a browser specific connection. It probably has loads of users on one server which could slow things down. With VPNs, you get what you pay for and if you don't pay anything, don't expect much.

Install Opera developer and use it for VPN use and use Opera Stable for normal use. They have separate configuration folders and can be run independently of each other.

I have normal installations. The Opera installer separates the stable and developer versions. They are not portable but I don't see why it wouldn't work with the portable versions. In a normal install, the configuration folders are in the folder \AppData\Roaming\Opera Software. In that folder are folders named "Opera Stable" and "Opera Developer". These folders contain the complete configuration including extensions. I just clone them when I install Opera on a new computer. That saves me a lot of time tweaking and installing extensions. The portable version just moves the configuration folders to the removable drive and configures Opera to look for the configuration folders on it.

No problem running both versions at once.

You should be able to "install" portable version wherever you want, not just on removable drives.
