They specifically mentioned that they are going to use Chromium - not WebKit 2.

    In some ways.

Bah, that sucks. I didn't think about it having anything to do with WebKit, just browser vendors :( So now we'll be losing an x64 option when there were barely any to start with. What are we down to now, IE 10?

*sigh* Why am I envisioning a Chrome clone with the red O icon and the same bland UI and very little options to change? I need a pic of that grumpy cat from LOLCats with a "Don't Want" caption.

If we are talking about officially supported x64 browsers with stable releases "without other penalties" for Windows platform, yes, IE 10 x64 is the only option.

That Opera x64 build was experimental, anyways. Not even an alpha, AFAIK.

Does Opera ASA know it was only experimental as well?

Yes, that information comes from Opera ASA.

    http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/64-bit-opera-and-out-of-process-plug-ins/#builds

If you try to download Opera stable ( http://www.opera.com/download/ ), you won't find the x64 build. That's because it's a lab release, meant for devs.

AFAIK, the x64 build has been getting updated, but it isn't officially supported on Windows (it isn't considered "stable").

Well 'Version, 12.14 Build 1737, Platform x64, System Windows 7' seems stable enough to me.

Sigh. From the perspective of Opera ASA, it still isn't considered stable. That's why you can't find it at www.opera.com/download

Well it was fine when I first downloaded it. No wonder Opera are going downhill.

    it is offered http://www.opera.com/browser/download/

just click more options and you can download the 64bit stable version.

I have used 64bit opera since the first stable was released and had no issues with it and I use it daily with tons of open tabs.

the benefit of 64bit opera is the fact you can use 32bit as well as 64bit plugins.

It looks like you may be right, dave.

    After some more small digging:

    http://www.opera.com/browser/download/

You can select the 64 bit architecture for the Windows build and it downloads the latest Windows x64 buid.

I suppose, from the location, that this is considered a stable build. However it's a bit more hidden.

Maybe, Opera help articles need some updates.

    Yeah.

But Java documentation, at least, is updated.

Opera documentation, however, still says that Opera x64 for Windows is only something that they are "cooking up": http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/842/

    Pretty confusing. o_O

I imagine that they aren't even bothering to update the current documentation.

As they will probably need to rewrite most of it after the migration to Chromium.

Probably. But it must have been different when I first downloaded the x64 browser as it was pretty easy to find. Maybe the defecting to Chromium thing has changed their minds about x64 browsing. I think it is a great shame, even a Webkit based Opera might have been OK. All I can see for Opera's future is as a Chromium clone. It might be good, but I have great reservations about this. I feel like I am going to lose an old friend. OK, a slightly irritable & often unreliable friend, but that was part of Opera's charm to begin with.

When I think about this new Opera, I think about something like a more polished Maxthon with full support to all Chrome extensions.

    I'm an incurable optimist...

Yes, I thought it might be not unlike Maxthon.

    This may cure you.

hopefully, Webkit can bring to Opera fonts that don't look like they were chewed by a rabid pit bull. ;)
