Last month, OpenAI, the Elon Musk-founded artificial intelligence research lab, announced the arrival of the newest version of an AI system it had been working on that can mimic human language, a model called GPT-3.
In the weeks that followed, people got the chance to play with the program. If you follow news about AI, you may have seen some headlines calling it a huge step forward, even a scary one.

A year ago I sat down to play with GPT-3’s precursor dubbed (you guessed it) GPT-2. My verdict at the time was that it was pretty good.
A year later, GPT-3 is here, and it’s smarter. A lot smarter. OpenAI took the same basic approach it had taken for GPT-2 (more on this below), and spent more time training it with a bigger data set.

A little over a year ago, OpenAI, an artificial intelligence company based in San Francisco, stunned the world by showing a dramatic leap in what appeared to be the power of computers to form natural-language sentences, and even to solve questions, such as completing a sentence, and formulating long passages of text people found fairly human.

It is now a truly monster language model, as it's called, gobbling two orders of magnitude more text than its predecessor.
But within that bigger-is-better stunt, the OpenAI team seem to be approaching some deeper truths, much the way Dr. David Bowman approached the limits of the known at the end of the movie 2001.

Buried in the concluding section of the 72-page paper, Language Models are Few-Shot Learners, posted last week on the arXiv pre-print server, is a rather striking recognition.

What the authors are saying is that building a neural network that just predicts probabilities of the next word in any sentence or phrase may have its limits.

GPT-3 with 175 billion parameters is able to achieve what the authors describe as "meta-learning." Meta-learning means that the GPT neural net is not re-trained to perform a task such as sentence completion.
GPT-3 is able to learn how to do a task with a single prompt [...] Just feed it an enormous amount of text till its weights are ideal, and it can go on to perform pretty well on a number of specific tasks with no further development.

That's where the story comes to a striking denouement in the new paper.

OpenAI’s latest language generation model, GPT-3, has made quite the splash within AI circles, astounding reporters to the point where even Sam Altman, OpenAI’s leader, mentioned on Twitter that it may be overhyped. Still, there is no doubt that GPT-3 is powerful.

Machine learning models are only as good, or as bad, as the data fed into them during training. In the case of GPT-3, that data is massive. GPT-3 was trained on the Common Crawl dataset, a broad scrape of the 60 million domains on the internet along with a large subset of the sites to which they link.

By “reading” text during training that is largely written by us, language models such as GPT-3 also learn how to “write” like us, complete with all of humanity’s best and worst qualities.

But because algorithmic bias is rarely straightforward, many GPT-3 applications will act as canaries in the growing coal mine that is AI-driven applications.
The creators of GPT-3 plan to continue their research into the model’s biases, but for now, they simply surface these concerns, passing along the risk to any company or individual who’s willing to take the chance.

All models are biased, as we know, and this should not be a reason to outlaw all AI, because its benefits can surely outweigh the risks in the long term.

Microsoft today announced that it will exclusively license GPT-3, one of the most powerful language understanding models in the world, from AI startup OpenAI. In a blog post, Microsoft EVP Kevin Scott said that the new deal will allow Microsoft to leverage OpenAI’s technical innovations to develop and deliver AI solutions for customers, as well as create new solutions that harness the power of natural language generation.

“We see this as an incredible opportunity to expand our Azure-powered AI platform in a way that democratizes AI technology, enables new products, services and experiences, and increases the positive impact of AI at scale,” Scott wrote.

The implications of the licensing agreement weren’t immediately clear, but Microsoft says that OpenAI will continue to offer GPT-3 and other models via its Azure-hosted API, launched in June.

We reported a few days ago that Microsoft has exclusively licensed OpenAI’s GPT-3 (Generative Pretrained Transformer 3) groundbreaking autoregressive language model.
While Microsoft was very happy with the deal it seems Elon Musk, one of the founders of OpenAI, was not.

This does seem like the opposite of open. OpenAI is essentially captured by Microsoft.

Of course, Musk might have hoped OpenAI would release the GPT-3 code for free to all, but this was something OpenAI never intended, noting that the technology was too open to abuse to allow unmonitored access.

Someone used OpenAI's GPT-3 text-generating software to write a string of posts on Reddit, convincing people the missives were penned by a real person, and banking internet points in the process, The Register can confirm.

Redditor thegentlemetre has produced over the course of the past 10 days hundreds of answers on the popular subreddit AskReddit in which people turn to millions of their peers for practical tips and life advice. At its most frenzied periods, the account generated about one comment per minute, offering a jumble of answers to people's questions.
That would be quite a feat for a lone human, considering most of these submissions are several paragraphs long.

Phillip Winston, a software engineer, speculated thegentlemetre was, in fact, a bot based on GPT-3. "I saw this post and thought it's either a prolific user or a bot," he told The Register.

"I looked at the history and saw they were posting once per minute at times. I figured it had to be a bot. I looked at the posts some were very real but many had issues, and I felt sure it was a bot, but better than anything I'd seen."
His suspicions were confirmed when he asked Reddit users in the GPT-3 subreddit to take a look.

A good as GPT-3 is today one thing is for sure, it will be twice as good within months, and thousands of times as good within a decade. When they figure out how to marry it with even basic reasoning, then identity and memory, it's hard to imagine how much better it will be.

Anyone trying to use OpenAI’s powerful text-generating GPT-3 system to power chatbots to offer medical advice and help should go back to the drawing board, researchers have warned.
For one thing, the artificial intelligence told a patient they should kill themselves during a mock session.

France-based outfit Nabla created a chatbot that used a cloud-hosted instance of GPT-3 to analyze queries by humans and produce suitable output. This bot was designed to help doctors by automatically taking care of some of their daily workload.
However, the erratic and unpredictable nature of the software's responses make it inappropriate for interacting with patients in the real world, the team concluded after running a series of experiments. It certainly shouldn't be used to diagnose people.

“Because of the way it was trained, it lacks the scientific and medical expertise that would make it useful for medical documentation, diagnosis support, treatment recommendation or any medical Q&A,” the Nabla team noted in a report on its research efforts.
“Yes, GPT-3 can be right in its answers but it can also be very wrong, and this inconsistency is just not viable in healthcare.”

There may be a silver lining, though. GPT-3 can't carry out any useful medical tasks yet, but its light-heartedness could help doctors relieve stress at the end of a hard day.

You may have heard about GPT-3 this summer, the new cool kid on the AI block.
Conclusion
As warned by OpenAI, we are nowhere near any real time scenario where GPT-3 would significatively help in healthcare.

Even for more administrative tasks such as translating or summarizing medical jargon, GPT-3 while promising is still many moons away for a production use case actually supporting doctors. We’re still in this phase where multiple, narrow-task supervised models win over a single, very ambitious approach.

The GPT systems are trained on millions of words and phrases, and then generate text inspired by that corpus after being given an input to work from. In this case the system takes as input not just your bullet points, but other information from the email chain and the user’s past preferences.

Of course, for something so important, you may wonder: why bother letting an AI do it at all?
One instantly sees the application in a support or sales scenario where a handful of scripted questions or replies can be re-generated to be different every time, or slightly adjusted for the person or situation. That avoids the feeling of receiving a “form email” even though it amounts to the same thing.

“If you want to make an email in the tone of the user, it can’t guess about the details. It needs a human. This isn’t a generated response, it’s taking direction,” Shumer said.

Codex is a descendent of GPT-3, a very large language model OpenAI released in 2020 and made available through a commercial private beta API. OpenAI’s researchers wanted to see how developers would use GPT-3 for natural language processing applications.

Codex is a version of GPT-3 that has been finetuned for programming tasks. The machine learning model is already used in Copilot, another beta-test code generation product hosted by GitHub. According to OpenAI, the current version of Codex has a 37-percent accuracy on coding tasks as opposed to GPT-3’s zero percent.
Codex can perform some tedious tasks, such as rendering web pages, launching web servers, and sending emails. The model also shows some of the zero-shot learning capabilities of GPT-3.

There is a catch, though. At least for now, not all Azure users will get access to it (even if they are willing to pay). Microsoft will offer safety monitoring and analysis to find cases of abuse or misuse of GPT-3 and it will offer filters to make sure your GPT-3-based chatbot doesn’t start swearing at your executives (even if GPT-3 thinks they deserve it).

You know the feeling; you’re on a dating app, and you start a conversation with someone, and things don’t seem like they add up completely. You’ve seen The Tinder Swindler on Netflix, and you’re suddenly wondering: Is someone about to ask me for money? The team at video dating site Filter Off decided to take a novel approach: Every detected scammer got added to a side-pool of dating hopefuls that only contained their own chatbots posing as adorable singles, and other scammers. As you might expect, hilarity ensued.

As a platform, Filter Off is a video-first dating app, launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

“The first time I noticed there was a problem was when I saw that George Clooney had joined Filter Off.
He realized that Clooney probably wouldn’t be on a dating site, and even if he were, he wouldn’t be a 34-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria. “I deleted their profile to get them off the app. Then I started noticing all these profiles that look like real people, but they were all these different profiles that didn’t add up.”

And so the work began. The team used GPT-3 to create a number of chatbots, combined with a script that generates human-like faces, to create a number of fake profiles themselves. The caveat: These profiles aren’t seen by “normal” users, only by people who the algorithm has determined are scammers. They put them in a pool of thousands of bots that look and talk like real people.

“The funny part is, two things happen. One, the scammers will run into other bots, but they’ll also run into other scammers, and they’re trying to scam each other,” laughs Weinreich. “They are like ‘I want $40 For a Google Play gift card’ and the other scammer replies ‘no, no you give a gift card to me‘ and they just kept arguing. It’s just this hilarious thing, where currently in our app, we have probably over 1,000 scammers that I know of that are actively talking to just bots. It’s great. They’re wasting their time and they don’t have to deal with our real users.”

“The funniest bit about our report feature is the number of reports I get from scammers reporting that they’re talking to a bot. I’m like ‘yeah, I know, that’s the point’,” shrugs Weinreich.

Report: Microsoft looking into challenging Google with ChatGPT-powered Bing

Microsoft is purportedly in the works to unveil a version of its search engine Bing that is powered by OpenAI's artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT. This is according to a report by The Information, citing sources knowledgeable about the matter.

ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool driven by AI that enables you to have human-like conversations with a chatbot. The Redmond giant could launch the capability before the end of March. With this move, the company hopes to challenge Google's dominance in the search engine market.

In 2019, Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI to support the latter in building artificial general intelligence. The two then formed a multi-year partnership to build new Azure AI supercomputing technologies. The New York City (NYC) education department has decided to block access to OpenAI's ChatGPT on school devices and networks, Chalkbeat has reported. Rather than adapt to new technology – which is here to stay – the education department decided to block access to dissuade from its use. The reasons for the block are numerous, authorities are concerned that the information may not always be accurate and that students may be using the technology to write their essays.

Since its launch, ChatGPT has had filtered put in place to ensure it only replies to safer requests. While this does prevent some of the abusive uses of the technology, ChatGPT can spit out wrong information at times, especially when it comes to maths. It also thinks it’s still in 2021 as that’s when its learning period ended and it has no connection to the rest of the internet.

While the block may deter students from accessing the powerful AI at school or on school devices, it’s not likely to deter those on their home networks who have homework to complete. In the medium- to long-term, it’ll probably be prudent for education departments to accept that AI is here and adapt their curriculums accordingly.

New York City students and teachers can no longer access ChatGPT — the new artificial intelligence-powered chatbot that generates stunningly cogent and lifelike writing — on education department devices or internet networks, agency officials confirmed Tuesday.

The chatbot’s ability to churn out pitch perfect essay responses to prompts spanning a wide range of subjects has sparked fears among some schools and educators that their writing assignments could soon become obsolete — and that the program could encourage cheating and plagiarism.

“Due to concerns about negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content, access to ChatGPT is restricted on New York City Public Schools’ networks and devices,” said education department spokesperson Jenna Lyle.

New York City public schools have restricted access to ChatGPT, the AI system that can generate text on a range of subjects and in various styles, on school networks and devices. As widely reported this morning and confirmed to TechCrunch by a New York City Department of Education spokesperson, the restriction was implemented due to concerns about “[the] negative impacts on student learning” and “the safety and accuracy” of the content that ChatGPT produces.

“While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success,” the spokesperson told TechCrunch via email, adding that the restricted access came in response to requests from schools.

As for OpenAI, when reached for comment, a company spokesperson said that OpenAI is developing “mitigations” to help anyone spot text generated by ChatGPT. That’s significant. While TechCrunch reported recently that OpenAI was experimenting with a watermarking technique for AI-generated text, it’s the first time OpenAI has confirmed that it’s working on tools specifically for identifying text that came from ChatGPT.

“We made ChatGPT available as a research preview to learn from real-world use, which we believe is a critical part of developing and deploying capable, safe AI systems. We are constantly incorporating feedback and lessons learned,” the OpenAI spokesperson said.

“We’ve always called for transparency around the use of AI-generated text. Our policies require that users be up-front with their audience when using our API and creative tools … We look forward to working with educators on useful solutions, and other ways to help teachers and students benefit from AI.”

In any case, the New York City public schools policy, which appears to be the first of its kind in the country, will surely force the conversation at school districts elsewhere. As use of the tech grows — ChatGPT had over a million users as of December — independent researchers and companies have begun piloting tools to detect the use of AI-generated text in student submissions. Some educators might choose to embrace them, while others, like Lee, instead encourage the use of ChatGPT as an assistive writing tool.

At this point, we’re all at least a little bit familiar with ChatGPT, the large language model developed by OpenAI to increase productivity and provide a little laugh every now and then. What you may not know, is that people are using this language model to cheat on college assignments and work projects. The new utility is called GPTZero, and it was created by Princeton student Edward Tian. Tian has already posted numerous proof-of-concept videos that seek to demonstrate the capabilities of this new tech.

The first demonstration involved GPTZero determining that a particular article on the New Yorker was written by a human. It then took its skills to LinkedIn, where it verified that a particular post had been created with ChatGPT. Tian posted his findings regarding the LinkedIn post with a short caption: ‘here's a demo with @nandoodles's Linkedin post that used ChatGPT to successfully respond to Danish programmer David Hansson's opinions.’

He didn’t like the idea that students were using ChatGPT to commit what he termed ‘AI plagiarism.’ Tian posted a short tweet elaborating on his concerns wherein he stated that he thought it was unlikely ‘that high school teachers would want students using ChatGPT to write their history essays.’

These are valid concerns that the creators of ChatGPT share. OpenAI is, at this moment, working on a watermark to instantly show whether or not something was generated using ChatGPT, but it isn’t ready yet.

Koko is a nonprofit mental health platform that connects teens and adults who need mental health help to volunteers through messaging apps like Telegram and Discord.

On Discord, users sign into the Koko Cares server and send direct messages to a Koko bot that asks several multiple-choice questions (e.g., "What's the darkest thought you have about this?"). It then shares a person's concerns—written as a few sentences of text—anonymously with someone else on the server who can reply anonymously with a short message of their own.

During the AI experiment—which applied to about 30,000 messages, according to Morris—volunteers providing assistance to others had the option to use a response automatically generated by OpenAI's GPT-3 large language model instead of writing one themselves (GPT-3 is the technology behind the recently popular ChatGPT chatbot).

In the introduction to the server, the admins write, "Koko connects you with real people who truly get you. Not therapists, not counselors, just people like you."
Soon after posting the Twitter thread, Morris received many replies criticizing the experiment as unethical, citing concerns about the lack of informed consent and asking if an Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved the experiment.

OpenAI announced this week that they are planning to charge money soon for its AI-powered natural language processing chatbot tool ChatGPT. "Our goal is to continue improving and maintaining the service, and monetization is one way we're considering to ensure its long-term viability," the company stated on its Discord server.

The recent launch of OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT has raised alarms within Google, according to reports from The New York Times. Now, the Times says Google has plans to “demonstrate a version of its search engine with chatbot features this year” and unveil more than 20 projects powered by artificial intelligence.

There’s no specific timeframe mentioned for the launch of Google’s AI search demo, but other projects from the slide presentation viewed by the Times are apparently set to debut during its annual I/O event in May, which has previously launched features like Duplex and Google Glass.

The situation is serious enough that the Times also reports that Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin — who remain the controlling shareholders of Google’s parent company Alphabet — have “offered advice” to company leaders, approved plans, and pitched ideas while meeting with executives to talk about ChatGPT last month.
