Israeli hacker allegedly stole $1.7M in cryptocurrency from Europeans

A cybercriminal from Israel is facing a long list of felonies associated with the supposed theft of $1.7 million (6.1 million NIS) in various cryptocurrencies.
The perp, 31-year old Eliyahu Gigi from Tel Aviv, reportedly stole Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dash from various foreigners, including Belgians, Dutch, and Germans, Israeli news reports.

According to the report, Gigi had been operating a “criminal enterprise” spanning a number of websites that allowed him to conduct his criminal activity and swindle his victims out of their money.
The perp used these websites to distribute software that infected his victim’s computers, and stole cryptocurrencies. The report hasn’t stated how software managed to do this, though.

LibertyX Surpasses 1,000 Bitcoin ATMs Across the US

LibertyX, the company that launched the first U.S. bitcoin ATM, will expand into 90 retail locations in Arizona and Nevada, according to a statement made Wednesday.
With this move LibertyX now operates more than 1,000 so-called bitcoin ATMs across the country. The latest additions are set up in AMPM, ARCO and Chevron gas stations, as well as select Family Dollar stores.

This is not the first milestone the company has passed. In 2014, the company launched the first crypto ATM in America in Boston’s South Station. In 2016, it hired the first bitcoin cashier. In 2019, it became the first to enable debit card transactions on traditional, non-bank ATMs, without a hardware upgrade.

Dmitri Vasilev, the former CEO the now defunct crypto exchange WEX, was arrested Friday in Italy, the BBC’s Russian Service reported.

The publication cites Vasilev’s acquaintance and two anonymous investors in WEX who told BBC about the arrest. The attaché of the Russian embassy in Italy, Dmitri Gurin, declined to provide any details, as did the Italian financial police (Guardia de Finanza).

WEX was launched by Russian citizen Vasilev and operated for a year, until it froze withdrawals in July 2018 and hasn’t restored normal service ever since.

A government panel in India has issued a recommendation to ban all “cryptocurrencies created by non-sovereigns,” a step which could be applied to Bitcoin.

The panel said anyone dealing with digital currencies of any kind could face 10 years behind bars and be handed hefty fines.
As part of its recommendation, the panel laid out the reasons why cryptocurrencies should be banned.

“The Committee notes with serious concern mushrooming of cryptocurrencies almost invariably issued abroad and numerous people in India investing in these cryptocurrencies [...]"
“There is no underlying intrinsic value of these private cryptocurrencies. These private cryptocurrencies lack all the attributes of a currency. There is no fixed nominal value of these private cryptocurrencies i.e. neither act as any store of value nor they are a medium of exchange,” it adds.

According to the latest research from SonicWall, cryptojacking activity rose by 9 percent between January and June 2019 when compared to levels seen in the last six months of 2018.
Cryptojacking refers to when a user’s computing power is hijacked by malware to mine cryptocurrency, which is often triggered by code hidden in websites.

According to a blog post announcing the new partnership on July 25, Safeway – and Albertsons Companies’ subsidiary – operates 894 locations across 17 American states.
In an interview with Yahoo! Finance, Lolli CEO & co-founder Alex Adelman said that teaming up with “one of the most well-recognized food retailers in the United States [...] will give people the ability to get involved in holding and owning Bitcoin — perhaps for the first time.”

A man from Monmouth County, New Jersey who sold more than $2 million worth of Bitcoin through a private website was indicted by a federal grand jury for operating an unlicensed money transmitting business on July 24 .
Forty-six-year-old William Green operated the website ‘Destination Bitcoin’, through which he exchanged fiat currency into BTC for his customers in exchange for a fee.

A press release published by the Department of Justice states that:

Federal law provides that any person who owns or controls a money transmitting business shall register the business (whether or not the business is licensed as a money transmitting business in any State) with the Secretary of the Treasury.
The man will face a maximum sentence of 5 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. The date for Green court hearing is yet to be established.

An Austrian printing company that has history going back to the early 1800s has launched a cryptocurrency storage device.
The new hardware wallet comes from YOUNIQX Identity, a subsidiary of the Vienna-based Austrian State Printing House (Oesterreichische Staatsdruckerei or OeSD) – a secure printing firm which is now the country’s high-tech passport maker and provider of other secure identity solutions.

Called Chainlock, the device is aimed to address the vulnerability of of “hot” or online wallets to hacking, which OeSD said in an announcement Monday “are a great security risk.”
The “100-percent offline” wallet offers private key generation in a (patent applied for) high-security enclave that OeSD said means the keys cannot be viewed by any outside party – even YOUNIQX or OeSD employees.
