Google is ending its sweeping ban on cryptocurrency-related advertising and plans to allow regulated crypto exchanges to buy ads in the United States and Japan. The new policy starts in October.

Google's original restrictions, which it announced in March and rolled out in June, were intended to protect consumers and included initial coin offerings (ICOs), wallets and trading advice, which are still not allowed.

Google's updated policy applies to advertisers all over the world, though the ads can only run in the U.S. and Japan and interested parties will need to apply for certification to serve ads in each country individually. Google's move follows Facebook, which started allowing pre-approved cryptocurrency advertisers in June.

Described by the Monero team as a "burning" bug, the issue is in how Monero exchange platforms handle incoming transactions.

This bug, if an attacker would have discovered it, could have allowed hackers to steal massive amounts of cryptocurrency from exchanges within seconds.

This dangerous bug was fixed earlier today with the release of v0.12.3.0 of the Monero code.

"The bug basically entails the wallet not providing a warning when it receives a burnt output," said Monero developers in a bug post-mortem today.

The exchange currently only supports just five cryptocurrencies — Ethereum, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum Classic and Litecoin — and the process of adding each one has been gradual.

That clearly isn’t a sustainable process if Coinbase is to add “hundreds” of tokens, as CEO Brian Amstrong told an audience at TechCrunch Disrupt it eventually plans to.

“Today we’re announcing a new process that will allow us to rapidly list most digital assets that are compliant with local law, by satisfying listing requests in a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction manner. In practice, this means some new assets listed on our platform may only be available to customers in select jurisdictions for a period of time,” the company said in a blog post.

Interestingly, the company also noted that it may introduce a listing fee — this is common with many other exchanges — in the future in order to cover costs around adding some projects.

According to a report released last month, Chinese hackers targeted government computers and internet service providers in Alaska before and after a trade visit from state officials and business leaders in May. And earlier this summer, authorities revealed that Russian hackers had attempted to disrupt the U.S. power grid and the office of Sen. Claire McCaskill.

These cyber-attacks could have been much worse. Imagine if hackers had shut down an emergency services network or coordinated an attack on multiple states or federal agencies.

Fortunately, the technology required to defeat such catastrophic breaches already exists. It's called blockchain. By embracing this powerful tool, government officials can shield their constituents' data from digital sabotage.

Back in April, adult entertainment giant Pornhub broke the internet when it announced users can now buy a premium subscription with cryptocurrency. But despite all the buzz the announcement generated, it seems pornography viewers hardly share this enthusiasm for blockchain-powered payments.

In an email to Hard Fork, Pornhub revealed that cryptocurrencies currently account for “less than 1 percent of purchases made” on the platform.

Still, Pornhub remains optimistic about the future of the technology. “That being said, we expect to see widespread adoption of crypto[currency] and blockchain on our site in the near future,” a spokesperson added.

A Pornhub spokesperson could not provide a clear timeline for the implementation, but PumaPay insists the integration will go live in the first quarter of 2019. [...]
A PumaPay spokesperson told Hard Fork the company has onboarded over 60 “partners” (many of which in the porn industry) interested in implementing its payment solution.

A hacker has spent an entire day exploiting a vulnerability in the source code of the Pigeoncoin cryptocurrency to steal 235 million PGN tokens, which ended up being worth only a mere $15,000 after all the day's work.

The hack took place on September 27, according to users of the BitcoinTalk forums, who first spotted the suspicious blockchain activity, and later traced it to a user named "mrsandman1."

The attacker didn't exploit a Pigeoncoin vulnerability, but a bug in the Bitcoin code found and fixed eight days before, on September 19. That bug --CVE-2018-17144-- was one of the most critical bugs in the history of the Bitcoin network.

Apple has quietly removed an allegedly malicious cryptocurrency wallet from the App Store, following numerous complaints from users claiming their EOS tokens had been stolen after using the app.

The app in question, EOSIO Wallet Explorer, came into the spotlight after popular YouTube personalities, the Hodgetwins, posted a video blaming the app for swiping their tokens.

In it, the YouTubers explained that 1,500 EOS ($8,500) were surreptitiously transferred out of their wallet – without their consent or knowledge – not long after using the app.

For the record, tons of burned users had taken to Reddit and other social media platforms to warn against using EOSIO Wallet Explorer. The app had also received a slew of negative reviews and theft accusations on the App Store.
