Yup. Latest standard client, local block chain, encrypted wallet, stored in a TC container on a USB...and backed up. I hate clouds...they bring rain :D

    Hi mirmir,

That was a terrific article - especially the part about the fundamental distinction between material and virtual media of exchange being "technology-independent and matter-embodied vs. technology-embodied and matter independent" respectfully.

It begs the question of whether a technology-dependent and matter-independent virtual cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin could simply forge (mint) Bitcoins in order to achieve both universality and close the comparative advantage of gold and silver.

Minting Bitcoins would only make them technology and matter dependent, but would not solve the issue of technology independence which seems to be needed to become truly universal and be a direct competitor of existing mediums of exchange. It would therefore seem that minting Bitcoins would be tantamount to trading away the properties of anonymity and security if Bitcoins were to become like existing currencies - i.e. become matter-embodied - thus losing technology dependence which will never happen.

One can buy physical Bitcoins from Mike Caldwell aka Casascius (-https://www.casascius.com/).

Right, Casascius physical Bitcoins are just pieces of metal without the Bitcoin network.

Well, it takes some serious work to make Bitcoins anonymous. Buying Casascius physical Bitcoins for cash at a coin show would already be pretty anonymous, wouldn't it?

I think the technology dependence of Bitcoin is what provides the real anonymity and security of Bitcoin, not the physical incarnation of Casascius physical Bitcoins. Buying Casascius physical Bitcoins for cash at a coin show might be perceived in some semblance as being anonymous, but it is really out in public for all to see in the proximity of the sale and in that regard is not the least bit anonymous (unless the customer buying the Casascius physical Bitcoins is the Invisible Man!) :)

I'm by no means an expert, but it seems to me that almost 0% of the "media" gets BitCoin...and probably do the bidding of their respective governments, who HATE Bitcoin...in their reporting.

I also bought at $5 AND am in it for the long term...I could care less if it went up to $270 and then down to $75...I still made a killing (that I don't care about). What's the difference between your home's value in 2005 and 2009? People took baths there, and it happens all the time in the stock market too.

It'll stabilize...we got the "get rich quicker's" out of the mix now :D
