"Bitcoin price drops 10% as hackers exploit Binance’s API keys...

Binance is one of the biggest exchanges out there. According to CoinMarketCap, it’s one of the 4 biggest exchanges...

There was a huge increase in buy orders for Viacoins on Binance. In just a few minutes, Viacoin’s market capitalization jumped from $64 million to $159 million...

Binance looked into it and noticed unauthorized sell orders...

So it seems like a third-party service or app got compromised. Users of that third-party app were relying on API keys to control Binance accounts. A hacker may have developed a bot that submits orders at the same time...

While the Binance team halted withdrawals, it might be too late. It’s also possible that the hacker already had a big position in Viacoin on another exchange. The hacker could have sold a big pile of Viacoins shortly after manipulating the price on Binance..."

"Crypto bull John McAfee says SEC is striking out ‘in panic’ at digital currencies...

Cybersecurity tycoon-turned-cryptocurrency bull John McAfee lashed out at the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday night, claiming that the agency is running scared of digital currencies...

'The SEC must rely on a Supreme Court decision that created a ‘Howey Test’ for determining whether an item can be classified as a ‘security,’ McAfee wrote. 'A key element of that test is that owners of that item are passive participants and that they rely on the efforts of others in order to obtain financial gain.'

But that standard doesn’t hold up in the crypto world, McAfee argued. 'For most coins, it is our own efforts that bring returns.'..."

Never happen. But regulations with teeth will get implemented and probably half or far more of the existing CCs will be gone in a couple of years. Go back and study the dot com bust.

FWIW, I disagree with much of the logic of that article.

"WANTED: Binance Posts $250,000 Reward For Capture Of Hackers And Puts $10 Million In Reserve For Future Attacks: “We Can’t Simply Play Defense

Last week an organized group of hackers compromised the user accounts of numerous investors utilizing the Binance cryptocurrency exchange. The hackers, who had positioned their end game for weeks in advance, were stopped when automated Binance security alerts triggered a full lockdown on withdrawals....

The unregulated cryptocurrency space has been compared to the Wild West, where lawlessness, strong arm tactics and roving bands of criminals often took advantage of the innocent and unsuspecting. As such, Binance has taken it upon itself to ensure the security and integrity of its trading platform by doing what towns did back in the days of Billy the Kid – they’ve issued a reward for the capture of those responsible for the hack...

'To ensure a safe crypto community, we can’t simply play defense. We need to actively prevent any instances of hacking before they occur, as well as follow through after-the-fact. Even though the hacking attempt against Binance on March 7th was not successful, it was clear it was a large-scale, organized effort. This needs to be addressed.
    '
Binance is offering a $250,000 USD equivalent bounty to anyone who supplies information that leads to the legal arrest of the hackers involved in the attempted hacking incident on Binance on March 7th, 2018.'.."

Of course selling 400 million worth affected the price. The question is did they get out before the meltdown? And how much did they have left after the sales.
