Bank Of America: Our ‘Inability To Adapt’ Could See A Failure To Compete With Crypto

Bank of America (BoA) has admitted to US regulators it may be “unable” to compete with the growing use of cryptocurrency.

In its annual report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week, filed Feb. 22, the major US bank for the first time highlights cryptocurrency as an area that may cause it “substantial expenditure” as it tries to remain competitive.

“Our inability to adapt our products and services to evolving industry standards and consumer preferences could harm our business,” BoA states in the filing.

Don't Let Blockchain Cost Savings Hype Fool You

Last month, management consulting giant Accenture and McLagan, an operations benchmarking research firm, published the report Banking on Blockchain: A Value Analysis for Investment Banks.

The core conclusion of this report: blockchain promises cost savings for banks so dramatic, it will disrupt many lines of business and core banking functions, including assets liability management, regulatory compliance, cross-product processing, and trade execution.

In fact, the report touts cost savings of 70% or more in these areas, with savings of over 50% for the entire finance function, as well as liquidity risk, complex finance, and other areas.

Always the skeptic, I decided to follow the maxim if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Does the argument in the Accenture/McLagan report hold water? Or is it just another example of the fragile hyperbole so common in the blockchain world today?

It’s one of the best-known cryptocurrency legends: The guy who bought two pizzas with 10,000 Bitcoin back in 2010 to prove the digital currency worked. Now he’s at it again.

This time, early Bitcoin developer Laszlo Hanyecz wanted to test the Lightning Network, a technology that runs parallel to a blockchain like Bitcoin’s network and aims to speed up transactions. He ended up paying 0.00649 Bitcoin for two pizzas, or $67, and the transaction cost about 6 U.S. cents.

Well you would hope that IF you are going to conduct transactions with a company where your REAL NAME is on record, you would know to have reported the income. Coinbase is a completely "on record" type of transaction. There are many other ways to go the other route, but not via Coinbase!

Man who claims to have created bitcoin is sued for US$5 billion by family of hacker who was found dead

The family of a programmer who was found dead in 2013 has filed a US$5 billion lawsuit against Craig Wright, the man who has claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto, creator of the digital currency bitcoin.

The family of Dave Kleiman said in the lawsuit, which was filed in a federal court in Florida, that the two men jointly owned roughly 1.1 million bitcoin and a company.

However, they claim, when Kleiman died Wright backdated contracts to transfer the ownership of the coins and intellectual property to him.

Bill Gates says crypto-currencies cause deaths

He was referring to the way digital currencies like Bitcoin are used to buy drugs like synthetic opioid fentanyl.

In an "ask me anything" session on news website Reddit, he said that the anonymity of digital currencies meant they were linked to terrorist funding and money laundering.

Some criticised him, saying he was ill-informed about the technology.

Asked by one user for his opinion on the technology, Mr Gates replied: "The main feature of crypto-currencies is their anonymity. I don't think this is a good thing. The government's ability to find money laundering and tax evasion and terrorist funding is a good thing.

Cyber criminal organization continue to show a great interest in cryptocurrencies, the number of crimes against cryptocurrency industry is on the rise.

News of the day is that crooks have stolen 600 powerful computers from data centers in Iceland to use in Bitcoin mining. At the time, the computers, that are worth almost $2 million, have not yet been found.

“Some 600 computers used to “mine” bitcoin and other virtual currencies have been stolen from data centers in Iceland in what police say is the biggest series of thefts ever in the North Atlantic island nation.” reads the post published by The Associated Press.

Angry Coinbase users sue over claimed security failings, insider trading

In recent weeks, Coinbase has been hit with three federal lawsuits, alleging various types of wrongdoing ranging from security negligence to wrongfully keeping bitcoins to insider trading during last year’s Bitcoin Cash fork.

Early on Wednesday morning, users of the Binance cryptocurrency exchange began posting photos of accounts full of trades executed without their consent on social media.

All of these users’ altcoins—cryptocurrencies with small market caps compared to market leaders Bitcoin and Ethereum—had been sold for Bitcoin at market rates, they claimed on social media. The Bitcoin was then used to buy another small-cap virtual currency called Viacoin, users said, all without their knowledge. As a result, Viacoin's value spiked by roughly 100 percent.
