Now, it seems that OnePlus may be ready to enter a new market: smartwatches. Apparently, the company may be making a smartwatch called the OnePlus Watch.

The other day, a device with the marketing name “OnePlus Watch” appeared on the website of Indonesia’s IMDA regulatory body. The device is listed as a “Wearable Watch” with model name W301GB as per the listing, but the listing doesn’t reveal any more information, such as the specifications, software, or design. Most likely, it’ll run Google’s Wear OS and feature a Snapdragon Wear system-on-chip, potentially the recently-announced Snapdragon Wear 4100.

This is not the first time that we’ve heard of OnePlus potentially launching a smartwatch. Back in 2016, OnePlus actually confirmed that the company was developing a smartwatch. “We had completed the design but we still decided to scrap it. We have to be focused,” said OnePlus CEO Pete Lau during the 2016 Converge tech conference held in Hong Kong.

Perhaps OnePlus now thinks that Wear OS and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear platforms are mature enough to base a new product on, or they’ve advanced their own tech to the point where a OnePlus-branded smartwatch is ready for primetime.

OnePlus' first-ever smartwatch could be released later this year — the company has reportedly been working on one for more than a year and it recently also showed up on an Indonesian certification site.

Interestingly, while we previously expected that the OnePlus Watch might sport a very similar design and hardware to the OPPO Watch, a new leak from @MaxJmb suggests the OnePlus offering will feature a circular design, unlike the OPPO Watch, which has a square-shaped design like the Apple Watch.

Many dont seem to understand it so I clarify it. The Watch is circular.

OPPO's smartwatch made for an excellent alternative to the Apple Watch on the Android side, though, so that's necessarily a bad thing.

Mere hours after officially unveiling the OnePlus 8T, the Chinese OEM has started dropping hints and now a teaser that highly anticipated OnePlus Watch is coming soon.

We already know a little bit about the OnePlus Watch, we know that it’s likely to have a round crown and face unlike the Oppo Watch — which comes from OnePlus’ BBK stablemate. That’s about all we know though, as we’re not entirely sure if this upcoming watch will run Wear OS or some sort of forked version of OxygenOS designed for wearables.
In a not-so-cryptic tweet, OnePlus India has confirmed that OnePlus has been working on its own smartwatch since 2016.

However, this teaser clearly suggests that there is more coming to the OnePlus ecosystem and a watch would be a prime candidate.
The only area left to bleed into would be the extended wearables sector — potentially in the form of a smartwatch or fitness band.

We guess we’ll just have to wait and see if OnePlus decides that a teaser is not enough and just flat-out reveals the dang watch ahead of any potential launch event.

The long-awaited OnePlus Watch has been “postponed,” according to tipster Max J citing “multiple sources.”

The news comes after initial rumors that OnePlus was thawing its frozen wearable project this year. The company then confirmed the Watch’s existence in an official teaser just prior to the OnePlus 8T‘s launch. It didn’t provide a concrete launch date, but judging by the timing, it was believed that the wearable would launch alongside the year-end flagship. This didn’t materialize.
While it remains unclear when the smartwatch will make its debut, it doesn’t seem that OnePlus has permanently put its plans on ice.

As for specs, we know little about the Watch itself bar its likely design. OnePlus’ teasers suggest the wearable will wear a circular face akin to the Vivo Watch.

OnePlus Watch reportedly won’t be using Google’s Wear OS

OnePlus has been rumored to be working on a smartwatch for years now, but the project never came to fruition. The evidence is stronger than ever for a OnePlus Watch hitting the the market soon, but surprisingly it won’t be using Google’s Wear OS platform.

Max J, a fairly reliable OnePlus tipster, claims that the OnePlus Watch will not be using Wear OS, a bit of a shock given the company’s tight ties with Google and the Android platform.
Generally speaking, Wear OS is the de facto platform for smartwatch makers who don’t have the resources to craft their own wearable platform from scratch.
The OnePlus Watch is currently expected to release sometime next year, delayed from its previously-expected launch of last month.

OnePlus confirms upcoming smartwatch will run Wear OS

Back in November, a report claimed that the OnePlus smartwatch would not run Wear OS, which came as a shock considering OnePlus’ solid relationship with Google. Well, OnePlus has finally set the record straight, confirming its smartwatch will indeed run Google’s wearable platform.

In an interview with Input, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said the reason why the company’s smartwatch has been on-again, off-again is due to Wear OS, which has floundered in recent years.

“Wear OS definitely has room to improve,” Lau told Input. “What we’re trying to do is work with Google to try to improve the connectivity between the Wear OS ecosystem [...].”
Even with Lau’s comments, it’s still unclear what will separate the OnePlus smartwatch from other Wear OS devices on the market.

It’s nice to hear OnePlus is working with Google to provide consumers with a better product. OnePlus has been surgical with the new features it brings in major smartphone updates. Hopefully, we’ll see that level of precision when the OnePlus smartwatch is released, probably in 2021.
