There’s a new Nord out. Called the OnePlus Nord Core Edition, the phone launched to dubious claims of bringing the quintessential OnePlus experience to a whole new audience. However, the less-than-stellar spec sheet and lack of finesse mean that the phone is, simply put, forgettable.

The tepid release sits a mere Rs. 3000, £29, or €40 below the original OnePlus Nord. That relatively minor price difference is clubbed with a significant reduction in the kit. Moreover, the phone comes across as thoroughly uncompetitive against established competitors from Xiaomi, and also BBK-counterparts like Realme.

Be it design, fit and finish, or the kit on offer, there’s no real redeeming factor here.

Year after year, the company is tacking on good and not-so-good features, while evolving the UI a step further away from stock Android — despite significant outcry from long-term fans.
Amidst Oxygen OS’s identity crisis, there is the bigger problem that it isn’t taking any significant steps forward.

OnePlus experimented with something new in its smartphone offerings when it introduced the Nord last year, its first mid-range device in a long while since launching the OnePlus X back in 2015. The Nord brand has since had a couple of handsets under its name, including the Nord N200 5G, N10 5G, and N100.

The next mid-range device OnePlus is planning to launch in the near future is the Nord 2, as the company confirmed last week. Along with that confirmation, OnePlus also revealed a few specs of the phone, some of which represent a flagship-grade performance. We now know, in particular, that the device will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 AI processor, a flagship chipset unveiled in January.

OnePlus Nord 2 5G will feature a Triple Camera Setup.
The main sensor is 50MP Sony IMX766 with OIS.

The tweet, however, didn't mention anything about the other camera sensors of the device, although recent rumors suggested it would include 8MP and 2MP sensors as well as a 32MP front shooter.

While these remain unconfirmed for now, OnePlus will shed more light on the handset soon as the Nord 2 is expected to debut in its full glory on July 22 (via GSMArena).

After a constant feed of teases and tidbits, the OnePlus Nord 2 has now officially launched and provides some notable upgrades over the original while also coming with a MediaTek processor and the Sony IMX766 sensor, as found in the OnePlus 9/9 Pro.

The Nord 2 is the first OnePlus device to utilize a MediaTek chipset, with a unique Dimensity 1200-AI processor chosen to power the mid-ranger. In terms of performance, this matches closely with Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 that is found in the Poco F3. OnePlus touts up to 65% faster CPU performance and 125% GPU boosts over the original Nord, courtesy of this custom chip.
Measuring in at 6.43 inches, the Nord 2 includes a 90Hz refresh rate fluid AMOLED display with AI Color Boost and AI Resolution Boost tech helping upscale and improve content displayed on the FHD+ panel.

The OnePlus Nord 2 ships with OxygenOS 11.3 atop Android 11 pre-installed with a number of customization options that fans may recognize from ColorOS.
Pricing will start at £399 for the 8/128GB model, while the 12/256GB option is priced at £469. Pre-orders are open from July 22 until midnight July 27 from Amazon or OnePlus.com.
