    Hi Folks,

Is it OK to have more than one VPN installation on any one device at the same time? The device could be an Android phone/tablet or a Windows PC in my case. I ask because I don't understand how the TAP virtual adapters actually work and different VPN providers use different TAP adapters. Although I ultimately want to have only one VPN service/application installed on any one device, I find myself needing to have more than one installation per device when simultaneously evaluating VPNs.

I hope I have worded my question clearly. If not, please let me know and I will make some changes.

    Thanks in advance.

There's no problem on Linux having more that one VPN installed. However, if you have more than one connected, you'll need custom iptables rules to point stuff to the one that you want to use. Or to route one VPN through another, for that matter, using ip route plus iptables.

On Windows, I vaguely recall that installing multiple VPN clients can lead to chaos. I gather that Windows doesn't delete TAP adapters when VPNs disconnect. And maybe there's a limit to how many can be installed.

    I know nada re Android.

@mirimir 's right, theoretically you won't have any problems either on windows or android, however sometimes having multiple tap adapters installed simultaneously might cause conflict with one another. but most of the time there'll be no issues. as for the limit to the number of adapters that can be installed simultaneously, there's no such limit for windows. on android, you can not connect to multiple vpn's at once.

but, here's what you can do to overcome these issues:
use the stock ovpn app, so you can use as many profiles as you want. and there'll be no issues.

    Hi mirimir and IMDb,

Many thanks to you both for your feedback, which is proving to be very useful.
