    JerryM,

    Well OK here it is:

1)First your gonna have to delete your current MWAV
2)Then extract your MWAV downloaded file to C:\bases such that 'mwavscan' is in C:\bases
3)If your not having the 'Scan Clean' option, then do this:

    -Start-->Run--->type 'cmd'
-Here type 'cd C:\bases' without the quotes
-then type 'mwavscan/sc' without the quotes

4)After this use the normal 'kavupd' file to update...only thing is that MWAV will be installed in C:\bases and update will be automatic.

    Regards,
    Firecat

    Firecat,

Before I start, do I have to delete everything from the bases folder before I download the escan program to it, or can I leave it as is, and will that do some of the updating for the newly downloaded program?

    Thanks,
    Jerry

You dont HAVE to...but its recommended you do as starting with a fresh install would reduce the likeliness of problems.

    Firecat,

WOWEE. I only took seconds, and it also has the scan clean button. It has 118,536 as the virus count, but now I can update easily. I have DSL so it does not take much time.

When you say the update will be automatic, I assume you mean that after I click on the update, it will automatically install. Is that correct?

This worked so smoothly. It took a lot less time than all my questions and answers. Of course, we know that preparation and understanding will do wonders when one starts a project, and the results are better than otherwise. Thanks.

I am scanning my old machine and I notice that it has identified 7 entires in the virus window. All are identified as "not a virue:tool win 32 reboot."
I assume that they are false positives since they were not removed. It seems strange that they would be shown as viruses. In fact they not only were not removed, but there was no option to remove them. I am sure that is a good thing.??

Hope you are having fun learning how to instruct those of us who are not very computer literate.

    We appreciate it.
    Jerry

    JerryM,

It seems eScan Free will only detect Riskware/Adware/Pornware/Spyware, will not remove. I cannot verify this, but MicroWorld told me they did this in commercial version of eScan because some customers were giving backlash...

Tool.Win32.Reboot is a software through which you can do a quick reboot of your PC. Its not a virus, its detected as 'not-a-virus'.

When you click 'kavupd' it will download and automatically install the updates now.

I'm going now to sleep, so have a great day:)

    Regards,
    Firecat

Actually Adware/Pornware/Riskware/Spyware is not removed because removing some types of these thing can cause certain programs to malfunction.

    Yeah, Escan only detects adware/spware.

Someone in a freeware newsgroup once explained the proper procedure to install this program.

    1. Extract the file to C:\downloads
    2. Open up Windows Explorer and go the that directory
    3. Highlight MWAVSCAN.COM
    4. Right click on the file and choose send to desktop as a shortcut.
    5. Highlight kavupd.exe
    6. Right click on the file and choose send to desktop as a shortuct.
    7. Go to desktop
    8. Right click the mwavscan.com shortcut and rename it Escan.
    9. Right click on the escan shortcut and change the path to add the /sc. It will then look like this:

    C:\DOWNLO~1\MWAVSCAN.COM /sc

    or

    C:\DOWNLOADS\MWAVSCAN.COM /sc

    10. Click OK.
    11. Right click on the kavupd.exe shortcut on the desktop and rename it Escan Update

According to the poster in that other forum, the Escan program must be in the downloads folder for the update procedure to work correctly.

Anyway, when you want to update Escan, double click on Escan Update. And, when you want to run a virus check, double click on Escan.

Followed that procedure as it seemed quite straightforward and everything went perfectly. Did the updates and intitiated a scan which took 43 mins. Nothing major was turned up and I'm fairly happy that my pc is bug free. Thanks everyone for helping provide access to a top notch back up AV scanner. Ok it looks just slightly outdated, but the DATs are all up to date and the engine seems in fine working order!

I need help with this, first of all I already installed it but the thing extracts by itself and I can't stop it, secondly I don't know where it extracts too....

Third, I can erase it since I cannot find the program and windows search feature is worthless and I mean that with every word I say.

There may be an easier way, but I would go to Start - Search- Files or folders and then to all files and folders. Type in the program name and click search. That should locate it for you.

If the search feature does not find it, have you tried to see if it is shown in the add/remove of the control panel?

Sorry to bring up a somewhat old thread but I just want to be 100% sure on how that I am doing this correctly. I extracted all the files to C/Program Files/ Kaspersky, I then created shortcuts for both the Escan and Escan updater in the start menu. I then ran the updater and it placed a folder called bases in the root of my C drive. I took all the contents of this folder and cut/pasted them into the Kaspersky folder replacing all the originals that were in there. Now when I open Escan the virus sig date says 2005/05/06, so I assuming all it good to go. And to update I just run the updater from my shortcut and then cut/paste all the files from C/bases into my Kaspersky folder. Sound correct?

Yes, thats fine. If you dont want to manually copy the update files to eScan directory, then I recommend you install eScan right to C:\bases :)

Wondered if you could help me aswell Firecat, I have had escan for a while and I really want to get the supersecure database. As you know on the Kaspersky website they say "To include the SuperSecure database option in your auto-download change the ending of all links form "updates" to "updates_x":"

Could you tell me which links these are? What I do currently is type '_x' after these three 'kavss', 'Getvlist' & 'kavupd' and then run update by clicking 'kavupd_x' ('kavupd' before edit) am I on the right track?

Current Virus Count: 128734 and Sig. date 2005/05/06

    ThanX

Actually there is no need to rename anything - eScan's kavupd.exe automatically downloads the X-bases. Therefore it is already using the X-bases.

    ThanX mate.

If you don't mind whats your take on cureit? which one would you reccommend between the two? (escan 4.4.7 and drwebcureit)

does cureit create extra files like escan? or can you just extract it onto one folder on your desktop say?

    Cheers

I have never used CureIT, though I'll say its just like eScan, except there is no updater - you need to manually download the bases and put it into your CureIT directory.

Thanks for confirming I did it right Firecat, and putting the EScan folder in C:\Bases would be a good idea for totally automatic updates. Also to BornMemeber, I recently started using CureIT, I just extracted all the files from the ZIP folder to a Dr. Web folder that I placed in C:\Program files. I then created a shortcut to drw_start and put it in my start menu for easy access. To update you just get the most recent def from the Dr. Web site and then extract the files from it into the folder where you have DW saved, replacing the originals in the processes. I feel that both of these are great back up on-demand scanners for my main AV (NOD32) and I love that neither has to run any extra processes or services like some other on-demand AV’s (bitdefender for example). Yes they are a bit harder to use/update but once you get them working it is well worth the small effort required.

Just to clarify - Dont put the eScan folder into C:\Bases, let C:\Bases be the eScan folder. Get it?

    I mean - just install/extract eScan to C:\bases, thats all :)
