Linux. The distro frontier. These are the voyages of the OSS Snap. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new packages, to seek out new stuff and new configurations, to boldly go where no one has packaged before. Engage.

The two main package systems in Linux are Debian - derived from Debian and Red Hat Package Management coming from Red Hat. There are some others but these two dominate the Linux eco-system.

Behind Snap is the idea packages no longer have to be built for a specific package system. They can be installed on any distro regardless of what internal package system its running.

It may well move us closer to the day when distros finally have a unified package interface. A godsend for developers and end users alike.

We'll have to see how it gets there. A commendable and much-needed project.
