There seems to be a fundamental difference between TI11 and TI 2009 in how the file exclusion is done. In TI11 the Source files exclusion in the Options only effects data backups. When you do a partition backup, you get a different screen for Source files exclusion. On that screen, there are no files selected by default. You would have to manually add bak files for them to be excluded. In TI 2009, the Source files exclusion does effect both data and partition backups. You can see this by looking at the Source files exclusion on the left side of the Backup Wizard. The check mark to exclude files of a specific type will change depending on how it was set in the Options.

This explains why we didn't see this issue with TI11.

All you need to do is:

    1. Start TI 2009.

    2. Hit the Tools button.

    3. Hit Options.

    4. Hit the + next to Default backup options.

    5. Hit Source files exclusion.

    6. Uncheck the box to "Exclude files matching the following criteria:"

    7. Hit the Okay button to save the changes to Options.

    Ohh ok thank you.
So the problem was that it was excluding files.

    [edit]

Yikes, I have TI11 and the default option was to exclude files...
However when I restored my image, my Office 2007 still works.
It only exluded .bak files .tmp files and ~ files

Unless I missed it, I find Acronis' lack of response to this issue to be deafening!

    Hello everyone,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Thank you for reporting this. The issue was forwarded to our Development Team with high priority some time ago, and is expected to be fixed in the next released build. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

For now, as had already been discovered in this thread, the solution is to remove "*.bak" files from the list of exclusions (or turn off exclusions completely).

    Thank you.

Happy to hear that the problem has been recognized.

It’s my opinion that all source files exclusions should be turned off by default. This would also require a change to the Recovery Manager CD which I expect will be a continuing problem for many.

If a person wants to get creative they should be able to turn on whatever suits their desire.

This is my opinion too. These files may or may not take up that much space depending on the system. I still have older programs that used the .BAK extension as a backup file and I want to keep my backup files -- they're there for a reason.

I wonder if Acronis is going to just change the default or if they're going to "detect" Office and include the "problem" files even if they would have been excluded by default.

    Thanks MudCrab,

Hopefully they will change the default setting and modify the Recovery Manager accordingly. Leaving the door open for a user to shoot himself/herself in the foot is OK but don’t let an innocent user fall into this one.

    Guys at Acronis,

At least post a notice of this Office issue on the front page of your web sight, and send emails to every customer regarding this. That would show you're aware of the problem, and make you a humble company. I'd like you a lot more. You do have a lot of customers, and should be willing to do everything in your power to keep them. :)

Again, could someone please tell me the correct size of the normal #9615 Boot CD (before any plugins are added)? I'd greatly appreciate it.

This problem with Microsoft Office wanting to re-install if the BAK file is missing should be the problem of Microsoft and not Acronis problem. I have been messing around with computers since 1974 and have never seen a program that would depend on a BAK file. If I saw a BAK file I always felt that it was safe to remove because the 'original' was still there.

So instead of complaining to Acronis, we should complain to Microsoft. What do you think?

I agree that Microsoft has made an error in relying on a file with a .bak extension. If TI however has any exlusions set by default either in the Windows environment or the rescue CD environment then they have also made an error.

Personally, I think setting exclusions for an image is a bad thing with maybe the exception of .tib files. Take it all, then you have it all, no matter what quirk arises when you go to use it.

I get the same size you show in Post #45. I used the default options (no time-out set and no startup parameters).

Honestly, whether it's a Microsoft problem or not, some folks who are using ATI 2009 may not be aware of how simply unchecking the .BAK exclude box...will save them a lot of problems. Acronis is responsible for making the image of the hard drive, not Microsoft. They should inform their customers of this very small, ...yet very big problem.
