One week ago, Nvidia announced it would effectively begin renting out its impossible-to-buy RTX 3080 graphics card over the internet. The graphics giant now offers a new tier of its GeForce Now cloud gaming service, $99 for a six-month membership, that promises 4K HDR gaming at 60fps, or 1440p at 120fps, delivered to practically any device you own, with far lower latency than Nvidia’s service has ever offered before.

I spent a huge chunk of yesterday testing it out on my phone, laptop, a borrowed Nvidia Shield TV set-top box, and even my own RTX 3080-equipped desktop PC for some direct comparisons. And on the performance front, at least, I came away impressed.

The reason I won’t buy in, though, is because large portions of my PC game collection simply aren’t there since Nvidia can’t obtain the streaming rights.
Nvidia’s adding new games every week, including titles as new as Far Cry 6 and New World, but Nvidia can’t promise that some of them won’t also disappear.

Still, real RTX 3080 cards are still going for $1,600 on eBay, and PC hardware in general is very expensive to piece together right now. Gaming rigs use a lot of electricity, too, and energy costs are soaring in parts of the world. For the right person, $200 a year doesn’t sound like too much to ask for a competent gaming PC in the cloud.

Recently Nvidia announced it was bringing a super-high-end RTX 3080 tier to GeForce Now, allowing users willing to pay a premium to get access to the performance of a 3080 on its cloud games. Now Nvidia is slowly rolling out that 3080 tier to some lukcy users.

In its weekly GFN Thursday post, Nvidia announced that people who have pre-ordered an RTX 3080 membership should begin to gain access to their new "virtual graphics card" starting today for the first wave of users, and the rollout should continue over the course of the month.

Nvidia is working with a pre-order modality here, meaning that those who are interested in getting upgraded resolutions and framerates on their GeForce Now games can pay $100 now for a six-month membership and will be given access at some point — pre-orders are still open, so if that's something you're keen to try, go to Nvidia's website and sign up now.

With the arrival of Nvidia's RTX 3080 tier, Nvidia is also adding 17 new games to the platform.
Most of these titles won't be benefitting much from all those extra frames you'll be getting out of your new cloud RTX 3080, but that doesn't mean you won't have fun playing.

Nvidia’s GeForce Now has seemingly earned the crown for the best cloud gaming tech thanks to its new RTX 3080 tier, but that may have come with a cost. GeForce Now has started establishing performance caps on certain games, leaving some popular titles without support for 60fps gameplay.

First highlighted by some users on Reddit, GeForce Now has quietly cut back the performance of some popular games. The change was noticed in the days following the rollout of the new top RTX 3080 tier on the service.

GeForce Now’s “Premium” subscription tier offers players access to RTX 2080-equivalent servers that can stream games at up to 1080p at 60fps, where the new 3080 tier can go up to 4K at 120fps. In a blog post from earlier this year that announced this new tier, Nvidia said it would be improving streaming quality by using Vsync technology to hit that frame rate consistently.

Now, though, players are seeing much lower frame rates on some games. Two games called out, in particular, are Cyberpunk 2077 and the newly released Guardians of the Galaxy, which are capped at 45fps and 50fps respectively.

We’ve since confirmed with Nvidia, who has also put out a support page on the topic, that 12 games on GeForce Now currently have their performance capped below 60fps.

These framerate caps are called the “Optimal Playable Settings” and are the default setting for each gameplay session. However, Nvidia says that players can override these settings on a session-by-session basis.

LG first said in January that Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service was headed to some of its TVs, and now, it’s finally here — though as a beta. LG is rolling out the beta this week for “select 2021 LG 4K OLED, QNED Mini LED, and NanoCell TV models in 80 markets,” according to a press release.

GeForce Now lets you play PC games you own on other devices via the cloud, and this new webOS app will make it easier to use the service on a bigger screen. That said, games will be capped at 60fps and 1080p resolution — you won’t be able to play GeForce Now games in 4K via the webOS app. (That feature is currently exclusive to Nvidia’s Shield TV set-top box.)

Update 7/21: After a limited rollout back in June, Nvidia has confirmed to 9to5Google that 120fps gameplay is now rolling out widely to all Android smartphones with support for the high refresh rate displays.

Nvidia says that the expanded support will arrive “over the coming weeks” and that the experience could vary from device to device.

Nvidia is upgrading its GeForce Now game streaming service to support 1440p resolution at 120fps in a Chrome or Edge browser. GeForce Now members on the RTX 3080 tier of the service will be able to access the new browser gameplay options today by selecting 1440p on the GeForce Now web version.

Nvidia originally launched its RTX 3080 GeForce Now membership tier last year, offering streams of up to 1440p resolution with 120fps on PCs and Macs or 4K HDR at 60fps on Nvidia’s Shield TV. Previously, you had to download the dedicated Mac or Windows apps to access 1440p resolution and 120fps support, as the web version was limited to 1080p at 60fps.

Nvidia’s top RTX 3080 tier is available for $19.99 per month or a cheaper six-month membership for $99.99 (that works out to around $16.66 per month). Nvidia is launching this updated web version alongside six additions to GeForce Now this week. The company is now using GeForce RTX 4080-class graphics processing units on its high-end servers. Before today, users paying for the most expensive subscription plan could access servers with server-grade GPUs that are equivalent to GeForce RTX 3080 GPUs.

Customers can try out GeForce Now for free. There is a queue system and you are limited to 60-minute gaming sessions. If you want to use the service on a daily basis, a ‘Priority’ membership lets you launch a game right away and play for up to six hours at a time for $9.99 per month. You are limited to a 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second.

In addition to access to more powerful servers, GeForce Now Ultimate supports 4K resolution. If you have a gaming monitor, the Ultimate membership now also supports 240Hz (up from 120Hz). Users can also enable Nvidia’s proprietary features, such as DLSS 3 and Nvidia Reflex.

If you have an Nvidia G-Sync monitor, GeForce Now will adapt the streaming rate depending on how many frames per second you get in your Nvidia Reflex-compatible game. That’s neat!

You'll soon have access to a host of PC games in your car without buying a Tesla. NVIDIA has announced that it's bringing GeForce Now game streaming to cars using the company's Drive platform. The rollout will offer access to titles like Cyberpunk 2077 on a driver display while you're charging or parked, or any time from the backseat. That could be more than a little helpful on a vacation, especially if you'd rather not buy a Steam Deck or Switch for a budding young gamer.

The cloud gaming option already has initial support from major brands like the Hyundai group (including Genesis and Kia), Polestar and China's BYD. I tested out the Ultimate tier, powered by Nvidia's RTX 4080 "SuperPODs" on a server set up for reviewer early access, for a week. If I hadn't been hyper-conscious of frame numbers and hiccups, I could have been tricked into thinking the remote 4080 rig was local. Except when I was playing ray-traced games AAA games on systems that had no business playing them, like laptops with discrete GPUs, iPads, or my TV with no gaming console attached—that always felt weird, in a fun way.

Ars had previously described our GeForce Now 3080 experience as "dreamy" and called the performance "a white-hot stunner that rivals the computing power you can muster" with the same RTX 3080 card in your PC. It's easy to lay at least the same kind of praise on the new Ultimate tier.

If you already bought a game from a major PC gaming store, and GeForce Now supports it, you can play it through GeForce Now, free or paid. (It's easier to download the free client and scan your game libraries than searching one by one.)

That makes the $20/month cost of an Ultimate subscription, or even the $10/month Priority package, a tricky question for those without a huge library and backlog.
For the 4080 tier to pay off, specifically, you'd want to have a few games lined up that can really stretch your remote rig. That will certainly apply for some people, but uncertainty about future releases can skew the value.

This likely isn’t going to turn the heads of any serious hardcore gamers but for more casual gamers, this will look a little more enticing.

It seems like every company has been handing out GeForce Now trials. With some gaming Chromebooks, companies are giving out up to three months’ worth of the best cloud gaming experience you can get. With Stadia’s latest to leave the arena, the gaming platform is growing even more.

Today, emails have been sent out to users with Ubisoft accounts to promote Ubisoft titles on GeForce Now. Users with purchased games through a connected Ubisoft Connect account get access to those games in GeForce Now. The best part about that email is that Ubisoft is including a 1-month trial for a GeForce Now Priority membership.
The Priority tier is the middle-of-the-road membership, which comes with access to a “premium” rig.
