Why it matters: Nvidia might be best known for its line of video cards, but the company has a broad range of interests, such as AI, data centers, and automotive technology. Now, it’s reportedly about to expand its portfolio by acquiring Mellanox Technologies Inc. with a bid of over $7 billion.

Both Bloomberg and Reuters write that Nvidia will hand over the huge sum—the most it’s ever paid for a purchase—later today. Other companies are said to be involved in a bidding war for the firm, including Intel, which reportedly offered $6 billion a few months ago, and Xilinx.

Mellanox’s chips are said to increase the speed at which data is transferred from components both within and between computers—an important factor for today’s businesses, where speed can make a big difference to enterprise networks and cloud services.

U.S. chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA.O) is set to win unconditional EU antitrust approval for its $6.8 billion acquisition of Mellanox Technologies (MLNX.O), people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

Nvidia, known for its powerful gaming graphics chips, is looking to boost its data center and artificial intelligence business via the takeover, its biggest deal, helping it to better compete with rival Intel (INTC.O).
The European Commission, which is scheduled to decide on the deal by Dec. 19, declined to comment. Nvidia and Mellanox also declined to comment.

Once known as a provider of gaming chips, Nvidia now also provides chips to speed up artificial intelligence tasks such as teaching servers to recognize images. Mellanox makes chips that connect those servers together inside the data center.

Nvidia expects its US$6.9 billion acquisition of high-speed interconnect vendor Mellanox Technologies to close later this month after the deal was approved by Chinese antitrust regulators.

The company announced on Thursday that the Mellanox deal was approved by China's State Administration for Market Regulation, the last regulatory hurdle Nvidia needed to clear before it can take ownership of the publicly traded company, minus customary closing conditions.
Nvidia said it expects the deal, which was announced a year ago, to close by or around April 27.

Nvidia and Mellanox have previously collaborated on solutions, including Nvidia's DGX-2 deep learning system, which includes eight Mellanox ConnectX adapters that supports both InfiniBand and 100-gigabit Ethernet connectivity, enabling faster data throughput for Nvidia's GPUs.

NVIDIA on Monday announced the completion of its acquisition of Mellanox Technologies, Ltd., for a transaction value of $7 billion.

The acquisition, initially announced on March 11, 2019, unites the two leading companies in high performance and data center computing. The combination will result in accelerated computing solutions based on NVIDIA GPUs and Mellanox’s intelligent networking solutions. Datacenters in the future will be architected as giant compute engines with tens of thousands of compute nodes, designed holistically with their interconnects for optimal performance.

Mellanox pioneered the InfiniBand interconnect technology, which along with its high-speed Ethernet products is now used in over half of the world’s fastest supercomputers and in many hyperscale datacenters.

“The expanding use of AI and data science is reshaping computing and data center architectures,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company's acquisition of Mellanox Technologies will make the chipmaker a central player in the shift from hyper-converged infrastructure to a new kind of data center architecture that is necessary to support artificial intelligence workloads.

The new architecture, Huang said in a letter to employees Monday following the closing of Nvidia's Mellanox acquisition, is all about "accelerated-disaggregated infrastructure," which he said consists of AI accelerators like Nvidia's GPUs, high-speed networking components like Mellanox's interconnects, container orchestration services and composable system designs.

"AI is now driving an architecture change from Hyper-Converged Infrastructures to Accelerated-Disaggregated Infrastructure," he wrote. "Nvidia and Mellanox are at the epicenter of this shift."

Nvidia's $7 billion acquisition of Mellanox closed on Monday after receiving approval from China antitrust regulators a week earlier, clearing the last major hurdle for the deal. NVIDIA acquiring networking giant Mellanox Technologies back in April 2020 for $7 billion, and now has formally renamed the company.
Mellanox Technology is now NVIDIA Networking, where if you visit Mellanox's website you will be directed to NVIDIA. The banner reads: "Mellanox Technologies is now NVIDIA Networking".

NVIDIA only continues to get bigger in the networking space, which is a very important part of the entire HPC cluster of the computing industry. NVIDIA has the dominant GPUs, a world-class networking outfit, and if it acquires ARM then NVIDIA would be collecting one of the last Infinity Stones, really.
