I have 190 GB on an internal 250 GB hard drive. I would like to clone it to a 200 GB drive. Everytime I try to do it, I get an error message:
Error unable to write disk 2 sector 2581 (Retry, Ignore, Ignore All)

Nothing seems to work, then when I reboot the drive does not show up in My Computer anymore. It has become 'unallocated' and needs to be repartitioned and reformated.

    What is wrong?

    Thanks,

    Lee

Might be base-10 vs base-2 values.
Drive manufacturers want their drives to look bigger so they state drive sizes in decimal values (base-10). But 1GB in base-2 = 1.074GB. (2 to the 30th power)

So a 200GB drive divided by 1.074GB = 186GB. So instead of the manufacturer saying it is a 186GB drive, they say it is a 200GB drive. If my theory is correct, then your 190GB (base-2) will not fit on a 186GB (base-2) drive.

To see this, click on "My Computer" and look at the "Total size" value for a hard drive with only one partition. If you know you have a 120GB drive for instance, it will show up in My Computer as a 111GB drive. If a drive is partitioned, add up all of the "Total Sizes" for that drive and it will probably come up to "Manufacturer stated size in GB / 1.074".

I checked and it should fit. Besides, I tried an image (see my other post) and I got a different error message

Do a thorough scan of the source and destination drives - sounds like a defective sector preventing the data from being written.
