You friend also states the following:

    -------- xp home sp2, Dell 4600 ie7-------

In addition to lack of Windows updates he's using an outdated web browser. He's probably got outdated & exploited versions of Adobe reader/flash, Java, Quicktime, etc. as well. A good friend would get him on Wilder's and start educating him on securing his computer. ;) For starters have him run Secunia.

    Hi Hugger,

Did your friend paid for the NIS 2010?

Norton cannot be blamed just because you know of one person that is having an issue. Especially as you acknowledge that the system is infected with malware. Most AV software does not like to be installed on an already infected PC.

Uninstall Norton; Scan PC with Malwarebytes and Dr Webb CureIT. Once you are sure the PC is clean re-install Norton.

Why not talk him through setting up a Logmein account on his PC and then you can clean it by remote for him?

Good idea! Sounds like his friend needs to do a little cleaning with all those AV's on his system. Hopefully he had removed them properly when he took them off.
