How long do these beta versions usually last?

Please note that installing this Beta may uninstall some Symantec and/or other third-party programs already installed on your machine. Please ensure that you have your prior product media (i.e. compact disks) so that you can re-install your products after the Beta version expires. This beta release will expire in 14 days, after which you can simply click the “Renew” option to extend your beta for another 14 days. After 28 days you will need to download and install the next build of this beta to continue using the beta. All beta versions of Norton Internet Security 2012 and Norton AntiVirus 2012 will expire on Sept. 20, 2011. At that time, you will need to uninstall the beta software and re-install your prior Norton product. Or, you can purchase a full version and install it.

I really like Norton since 2010, and it are improving it significantly again (in contrast to some other vendors who just rerelease their product wich some UI changes) with new features. Ofcourse it is essentials it doesn't hurt performance.

The thing which really needed improvement was in my eyes the user experience, I think the interface was really messy and didn't fit the status of the program as a set-and-forget product. I like to see that they simplified their interface, I also hope they integrate it more, instead of several seperate windows. But, that green security status, to classify that design the word ugly was invented.

Overall, early impressions are good; appears stable and the GUI has improved IMHO, from the last version.

    Beta forum is here

They should just release a product around SONAR4, Firewall, and their scan engine and quit trying to pack other solutions in one product. Imagine how efficient it'd be if it didn't have Insight, Optimization Engine, Cloud Storage, and the other stuff consuming resources, which they do even when not running because of memory allocation.

This is just another opinion in the heap though.. I'm sure their marketing department know what's what.

too bad independent testing is censored to keep this place attractive to commercial entities...

I did wonder how they would improve on the excellent 2011 release.
sonar 4 and the performance improvements is what im most interested in.

Yes, working well for me too so far (Windows XP SP3 virtual machine). I agree the GUI presents information in more manageable chunks. The only problem I'm seeing is an update "fail" for a whitelist (forget the exact name). Note that Boot Time Protection is OFF by default - that seems like a poor choice and perhaps it's just for the beta. Also Smart Definitions are ON by default, which is also not the case with NIS 2011.

I got a failed update for whitelist windows 7 64bit in virtualbox so I guess its a known issue. If I rememeber correctly boot protection was off in the beta for nis 2011 beta as well.

I did notice under sonar settings the default for action for remove automatically is high certainty only. the default in nis 2011 is off for automatic. the away default in 2011 is on. i wonder how good the high certainty option is. I guess in time we will find out.
I prefer to use full set of definitions dono why 2012 beta has smart on.

i do think the settings layout in 2012 is better.

Can I use my current NIS key? (this key that was given is good only for 14 days) and if not what occurs after the 14 days?

No updates and disabled security levels. Insight queries are also disabled locally and remotely for ID.

You can then extend your beta subscription for another 14 days. After 28 days a new build will be available and you can redo that process.
