I guess it's turned off by default because there are too many false positives. The screen is also misleading, not really well explaining what is going on there. I also don't understand why NIS doesn't tell when it blocks a program there, would make things a lot easier.

This feather turn off by default is that not everyone can make decision on the popup, symantec just block access regardless it is good or bad, maybe a white list in the future. But I think most of the time you can just let symantec to block it, the program won't crash.

Diablo2, I have noticed this myself and assumed it had something to do with Symantec's firewall. I am no FW expert (maybe Stem can help out here) but my research into filter drivers yielded this:

    http://www.calsoftlabs.com/whitepapers/filter-driver.html

My take on this is that they have "attached" the firewall onto the network drivers. Like I said, I am ignorant on the ways of firewall control so someone more knowledgeable will come up with a better explanation.

Abeltje, I have to agree on the misleading screen. At least during this discussion we have shed some light on some of these issues (which shows the value of open discussions in forums). I can see where having the Crimeware setting off by default is aimed more for the average user. For more knowledgeable users this can be an added tool for letting you know what's going on in the background during your travels around cyberspace.

My ISP offers norton 2007 but i want to use norton 2008 as i heard it is faster. The way it is activated is done all by contacting the internet automatically. So i am guessing it creates its own key and uses it. I am wondering if there is a way to get the key out from somewhere to use on "08.
There must be a key saved in a file or somewhere in the about dialog?

Why don't you try to copy NIS2008 over your existing licensed 2007 version?

I thought it would ask for the key again after upgrading? But who knows, you can always try, and if it asks you for the key your ISP didn't give, you can simply uninstall and install 2007 version again.

And another possibility: go to the Norton account thing in NIS2007. If it's there you can see the license key online!

When I installed 2007, the installation program created a Symantec folder with a text file with the key in it in my Documents. 2008 did not do this however.

I found a serial number in the about dialog? Will this be able to activate norton 08 or is there a seperate key?

The serial number is not the product key which is 25 digits in length.

Yes, I think it is an oem version, so that you install without a key, but you can use the norton account to store you key, when update to 2008, you can use again when install

You mean if i install 08 while having 07 it will ask to upgrade? The version of norton is customized and does not have the Norton Account link. Norton 07 does not start properly. It takes forever to open at logon but after that it seems fine. Guess 512MB is too slow.

You can uninstall youself or direct install 2008, it will do the same thing.
You can find norton account on the right upper corner of the interface, or you can get hint from the help file.
The interface start slower, it is normal as far as you don't see any error popup.

The norton account link was removed completely i mean. Since its an oem.

Not just the interface. While the tray icons are loading it now pauses for an extremely long time before opening norton fully. I was also playing a game with autoprotect off to prevent slowdown yet i see norton jumping up and down the cpu.

Looking through downloads and saw a link labeled "Free updates for Norton 2007 customers" but only people with norton 2007 installed can see the offer. Wondering if that offer is a free upgrade to 2008? Does anyone who has 2007 installed check it please?

http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/support/special/upgrade2007/index.jsp See how the link has upgrade 2007 in it? That is why i am wondering if it is a free upgrade because it checks what is installed.

According to this website below, it was for free updating from 2006 to 2007 but the link they post is older and only redirects so maybe they offer 2007 to 2008 now?

You can ignore that upgrade page, it just help you simplify the process to uninstall the old version and install the 2008 later, all user are require to enter the key and activate again for the install package is online version, not the retail version with phone activation choice, if you don't have your OEM key, no way to upgrade. Norton account is just a link, you can find the link and register, then you got your key. https://www.mynortonaccount.com/amsweb/default.do

It is definitely a crap shoot as far as dealing with Symantec help. I was lucky enough to get a knowledgeable person on the only time I ever needed it. I do like the Live Chat though.

I finally had something show up in my Transaction Protection screen. I had installed McAfee Site Advisor to see what it was about. But I noticed that it turned off Protected Mode in IE so I uninstalled it. Later I found this entry, a definite FP, in my TP screen.

I doubt it was a fp to norton. They probably attacking mcafee applications after mcafee insulted their endpoint security program.

Site Advisor does send some kind info back to home but one should read their EULA for more info . The behaviour blocker may well make a mistake because it may act as a keylogger which does not make it real keylogger :thumb:

I must say that the bootup isn't that bad at all with NIS2008. And I have used KIS7 too!
