    Hi All,

I've seen this happen before. The person installs NOD32 on a W2K machine and on relaunch, the registry editor launches too plus a whole bunch of reg windows all stacked up. Any idea why this is happening and how to stop it?

    TIA

I have never seen that.
Is there some sort of 3rd party registry editing tool on that computer, by any chance?

No, not that I know of although on both machines I did run a regedit program (RegCleaner 4.3) at some stage before NOD went on. However the reg window didn't start appearing on both machines until after NOD was installed. Strange stuff. It never occurred on an XP install.

I do not know this ins and outs of how NOD32 gets installed, but surely it adds information to the registry. I suppose one possibility is that the handler for .reg files got corrupted somehow. One way to test this is to create a blank text file with Notepad, but give it an extension of .reg instead of .txt.

When you right-click it, you should get the options Merge, Edit, and Print. "Merge" should ask you if you want to add the information to the registry (tell it No). "Edit" should open it with Notepad. "Print" should print it through Notepad.

If merging opens up the Registry Editor, then we can go from there.

This registry editor problem happens on my Win2K system, too. (And, alglove, my .reg files merge as they should.)

The editor that opens when nod32kui.exe starts (but not nod32.exe) is regedt32.exe (A Win3.1 looking thing), not regedit.exe (the Win2K default).

That is interesting. Regedt32.exe is the old regsitry editor left over from Windows NT 4.0 and earlier. It is still present in Windows 2000 as the only way to modify security settings within the registry. The two different registry editors were finally merged together in Windows XP.

I suppose one possibility is to do a search in the registry (using regedit.exe --> Edit --> Find...) for occurences of "regedt32" . That is weird.

Was this user or who ever he/she was using Spybot S&D, as I know I use and now and again on a re-boot of my PC I do get a whole lot of registry windows (say 7) that come up. But this does not happen all the time and rarely, but it does happen on a PC re-boot.

I've never encountered any issues though and my PC which runs W2K SP4 (sorry I'm not an XP person, never have been) works perfectly well.

Yes, one was using Spybot S&D but it is uninstalled now and now only one regedt32 window is opened when session starts.
What I have noticed is that every time Nod32 gets updated, it launches a regedt32 window.

I'm using WinXP Pro SP2 and not install any of adware or spyware application. Just NOD32 antivirus only for my protection and default windows firewall. Seem ok to me because the registry never comes up. My friend also use the same as I.But she install TweakXP and setting to disable windows registry editing tools. Looks ok for her.
