HQ Trivia, the live trivia gameshow app created by two of Vine's cofounders, is shutting down less than three years after launching.

The abrupt shutdown, which was first reported by CNN, was announced Friday after a planned acquisition fell through, HQ Trivia CEO Rus Yusupov told employees.

"With HQ we showed the world the future of TV," Yusupov said in a tweet. "We didn’t get to where we hoped but we did stretch the world’s imagination for what’s possible on our smartphones. Thanks to everyone who helped build this and thanks for playing."
The shutdown ends a tumultuous couple of years for the company.

Founded by two of the original creators of Vine, HQ Trivia became a viral hit soon after it launched in 2017. Coming on the heels of popular live streaming services, like Periscope and Meerkat, the app created a new genre of mobile game, which allowed hundreds of thousands of viewers to compete against each other in once-daily live tournaments.

Game over for HQ Trivia

When HQ launched in 2017, its first game HQ Trivia quickly attracted millions of people across the world who stopped whatever they were doing twice a day to play the game on their smartphones.
HQ generated millions in revenue through brand partnerships and in-app purchases — a feat few young consumer tech companies could boast of in their early years.

It worked with big-name brands such as Nike and Google and partnered with NBC, ABC and CBS to promote their programs.
But HQ wasn't immune from financial woes.

The quizzes will live on — maybe.

Four days after announcing that HQ Trivia would be shutting down for good, the company's CEO now says the trivia app will "live on," provided the company is able to finalize an acquisition with another unnamed buyer.

"I spent the weekend on the phone finding a new buyer and do [sic] right by everyone. We have found a new home for HQ, with a company that wants to keep it running. All employees, contractors and players are top priority. Severance will be paid and you will be able to cash out."
If HQ is able to continue under new ownership, the big question facing the company will be whether it can maintain its audience of trivia fans. HQ's live game shows propelled the app to the top of the App Store in 2017, but the app's early success was short-lived.
The company also grappled with internal chaos.

HQ Trivia, the once-massive online quiz game that last year kinda stopped paying winners their cash then shut down in February, is back thanks to an “anonymous investor”.

As the Wall Street Journal report, a push notification went out earlier tonight alerting users HQ Trivia would be resuming at 9pm.
There are no details on who this investor is, how much they’ve stumped up, how long the show is going to be back for or what this actually means in terms of this being a functional company again (most employees had been fired or quit before the end), [...]
