Today, I installed KB4345459 as I do think it is prudent to install it on W7 (it is not offered through WU, however it includes some improvements for W7 as well as a few fixes that may or may not affect everyone) and I installed the August Security Only Update for W7. No problems with any of the updates. I never use IE11, but I did install the August cumulative update - it too installed without problems. As with all updates, they can install just fine but problems occasionally pop up when you go to use an app. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

    KB4345459 is a fix for KB4338823, July 10, 2018, Security-only update.
For the Security-only update, fix KB4345459 needs to be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog, just like the Security-only updates.

KB4345459 is not offered through Windows Update, because the fixes are included in the Rollups.
The same issues in KB4338818, July 10, 2018, Monthly Rollup, were fixed in KB4338821, the July 18, 2018, Preview of Monthly Rollup, and later included in KB4343900, the August 14, 2018, Monthly Rollup.

    thanks mood.

I have a question. If I don't ever use IE, which I don't, and have it blocked with ESET to access web, is it still needed/recommended to update it?

    edit: thank you mr. X

    Yes it is. Here's why:
    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/pa...an-i-avoid-upgrading-to-internet-explorer-11/
    https://superuser.com/questions/749...ernet-explorer-updates-although-i-disabled-it

tl;dr: IE is bundled with Windows and IE is a shell used by some other browsers and other applications so its components should be updated too even though it's not used anymore.

Apparently, KB3177467 (32 and 64) is a prerequisite to the Sept 2018 W7 security only and monthly rollup patches, but as of today Microsoft has not released an official announcement to support that assumption.

KB3177467 was released in Sept 2016 and caused some problems, e.g. this particular update might break the system's Bluetooth stack if you have Intel Bluetooth hardware. There are others if you care to Google it.

    Hi emmjay,

Thanks. You wrote "apparently". May I please ask for a link where that is discussed. (sorry for asking!).

    The link for KB3177467 is:

    Hi FanJ,
mood mentioned it in the Bork Tuesday thread.
See the post and the article by Woody Leonhard:
Solution for the error 0x8000FFF in Windows 7
    Error 0x8000FFFF in Win7? Phantom patch for Win10 1803? There’s a solution.

Yes, me too. So I had no issues with installing the recent KB4457144 Rollup.
I'm not sure why KB3177467 was not installed on some users' systems, in 2016.

IE cum update for Sept (KB445726) is in the monthly rollup, but needs to be installed manually if you choose the security only update. Microsoft has released a second IE update for September (KB4463376) which at this time is not a replacement for the earlier KB. If you use IE and notice it is slow after the xxx726, manually download the latter update. If you do not use IE, October monthly rollups will no doubt include xxx376.

Microsoft has now released an official statement ...
    https://www.ghacks.net/2018/09/22/windows-7-error-0x8000ffff/

Summary: If the user did not install KB3177467 in 2016 when it was released, then the next time that Windows Update scans your system it will be aware of that and re-offer it to you. You do not have to navigate the catalog to get it.
