“The old way of doing it for decades was to get a hundred people in IT to spend three years on the product to design software for the end customer, collecting all the information to the risk-management system and through the front and back office, and it’s a massive IT project,” said Alex Schmelkin, chief marketing officer at Unqork.

“In no-code a small handful of developers gets together with business people and a final working piece of software can be produced in three months,” he said.
At Microsoft, a simple run of the numbers on how many apps will be built in the next five years shows how critical low-code and no-code software will become. Microsoft expects 500 million new apps to be built in the next half decade, which is more than all the apps built in the last 40 years.

Some third-party forecasts have estimated Power Apps could represent a $10 billion revenue driver for Microsoft, but Lamanna said that’s not high enough. “We think the opportunity is even larger than that. It’s a massive surface area,” he said.

More technology companies will build in no-code
Amit Zavery, general manager and vice president of Google Cloud who came from Oracle, said in past decades many tech vendors offered what can be considered “proto” low-code/no-code software.

The Google Cloud executive said there’s still a distinction between low-code, which requires some technical expertise to build an app, and no-code software, which is “really catering to the rank and file, anyone who has never built without needing to call IT,” but Zavery thinks the world will move more rapidly to no-code.

No-code software can require only a few days for workers to get trained on, and while low-code is still easier for tech vendors to build, the no-code product set is increasing. Google acquisition AppSheet has had 1.8 million apps created on its platform.

Amazon Web Services on Wednesday launched Amazon Honeycode, a fully-managed service that enables companies to build mobile and web applications without any programming. Customers can use the service to build apps that leverage an AWS-built database, such as a simple task-tracking application or a more complex project management app to manage multiple workflows.

"Customers have told us that the need for custom applications far outstrips the capacity of developers to create them," AWS VP Larry Augustin said in a statement.
Low-code and no-code tools have been growing in popularity in recent years, enabling people with little or no coding experience to be able to build the applications they need.

Amazon Honeycode presents users with a familiar spreadsheet interface for building applications. Users can choose from pre-built templates for functions like time-off reporting or inventory management.

Honeycode, on the other hand, is meant to appeal to non-coders who want to build basic line-of-business applications. If you know how to work a spreadsheet and want to turn that into an app, Honeycode is all you need.

To understand AWS’s motivation behind the service, I talked to AWS VP Larry Augustin and Meera Vaidyanathan, a general manager at AWS.
[...] the motivation behind Honeycode isn’t all that different from what Microsoft is doing with its PowerApps low-code tool.

A lot of low-code/no-code tools also allow developers to then “escape the code,” as Augstin called it, but that’s not the intent here and there’s no real mechanism for exporting code from Honeycode and take it elsewhere, for example.“

Even with these limitations, though, the team argues that you can build some pretty complex applications.

“People have been using spreadsheets for decades,” noted Augustin. “They’re very familiar. And you can write some very complicated, deep, very powerful expressions and build some very powerful spreadsheets. You can do the same with Honeycode. We felt people were familiar enough with that metaphor that we could give them that full power along with the ability to turn that into an app.”
“I think we have really, in some ways, a revolutionary product in terms of bringing the power of AWS and putting it in the hands of people who are not coders,” said Augustin.

Meet Waldo, a new product that wants to make mobile testing both faster and easier.
The New York-based startup lets you record tests in your browser by interacting with your app like you’d normally do. Every time you compile a new build, Waldo runs the same tests you previously recorded on multiple software and hardware models to tell you if everything works fine.

Waldo wants to lower the barrier to entry and lets smaller mobile development teams take advantage of automated functional and UI testing. It is part of a bigger trend of ‘no code’ startups — no technical skills required.
The company raised a $6.5 million round led by First Round Capital (with Josh Kopelman), with existing investor Matrix Partners and business angels also participating.

Low-code platform Betty Blocks aims to ride the citizen developer wave

Organizations are increasingly training end users to build applications without the aid of professional developers as part of an effort to spur innovation, Betty Blocks CEO Chris Obdam told VentureBeat. The company was founded in 2016 and this week announced it has raised $33 million to fund the ongoing development of a low-code application development platform specifically designed for “citizen developers.”

Obdam said the company will use its new funding to add tools that more proactively guide citizen developers to build applications in a way that enables them to avoid these issues. For example, much of the knowledge for identifying vulnerabilities in a piece of code created by a citizen developer can be automated, he said.

Microsoft is already working on these kinds of solutions in conjunction with the GitHub developer community. Microsoft’s Power Apps platform is low-code at the moment, but Converge360’s David Ramel thinks it will migrate to no-code as part of the company’s effort to generate AI tools that write their own code.

All of this points up the fact that no/low-code is not merely another step in software development, but a dramatic shift in the functioning and economics of the enterprise. With development democratized in this way, the direct cost of development should come way down even as the economy of scale for each new program improves.

Mid-sized companies are turning to low-code/no-code platforms, study finds

Nearly half of small and medium businesses (SMBs) say they use low-code/no-code (LCNC), according to new research from Accenture.

Today, there are a growing set of examples of SMBs employing LCNC to enable and simplify everything from customer acquisition to back-end operations and processes.
41% of the SMBs surveyed are using LCNC platforms to create new user experiences, 37% are using it to develop new customer-facing applications, and 37% are using it to develop new business applications.

This is significant because SMBs have traditionally struggled to attract digitally fluent staff, let alone developers as this talent is easily snapped up by large enterprises. In fact, one in five SMBs said that their search for a LCNC platform was driven by the scarcity of digital fluency in the workplace.

Expect this trend to accelerate, as 56% of these SMBs plan to increase their weekly usage of LCNC platforms relative to other enterprise software.

Low-code development catches on with CIOs

Low-code and no-code software development, which allows people to build applications by configuring graphical widgets and data fields instead of sifting through obtuse programming languages, has become broadly popular among state IT agencies, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers said Thursday.

“As we all know by now, the pandemic came on fast, and suddenly states were faced with unprecedented challenges that needed to be dealt with urgently,” the NASCIO report reads.
Low-code and no-code development has also caught the attention of officials such as Ohio CIO Katrina Flory, who told StateScoop in June that the techniques have been useful “where there were some manual processes that needed addressing and systems that weren’t quite up to the task.”

According to the NASCIO report, 31% of state CIOs said in this year’s member survey that low-code and no-code development will be “the most impactful” emerging IT area over the next three to five years.

Low-code and no-code’s ability to cut down on development time — especially during the pandemic — was a major selling point, too. One state CIO said it took application development times down from 18 months using traditional methods to an average of 11 days.
The report describes no-code as being ideal for “business users” capable of designing and constructing “functional but generally limited” apps without needing to write a single line of code.

Microsoft's low-code programming language Power Fx is now open-source

Following some leaks in February, Microsoft officially announced its new low-code programming language for the Power Platform in March. Dubbed Power Fx, this language allow customers of the Power Platform to build and customize application logic in a low-code environment. Power Fx will feel particularly familiar to users of Excel. In May, the company further boosted the language via integration with the OpenAI's GPT-3 models so natural language can be utilized for calculations instead of complex formulas.

Previously, Microsoft had only open-sourced the documentation for Power Fx with plans to do the same for the actual source code by the end of this year. Today, these plans have come to fruition. As noted by WalkingCat (@_h0x0d_) on Twitter, the source code is now available as an open-source repository on GitHub too. The commit for this change was made five hours ago at the time of this writing.

The larger corporate sector is also sitting up and taking notice. Goldman Sachs is purchasing a $90-million stake in WSO2, which has offerings intended to ease deployment of API and service-oriented solutions. As reported in The Wall Street Journal, the investment banking giant was looking at WSO2's capabilities to address looming developer skills shortages "by letting salespeople, accountants and other business-line workers make their own apps."

The Covid crisis "has accelerated enterprise digital transformation by years and more employees are contributing to software development and delivery," said WSO2 founder and CEO Sanjiva Weerawarana in a related post.

Creating apps and automating processes without having to write code has a number of benefits that have become even more attractive during the pandemic. So it's no surprise that Gartner estimates 65 percent of all application development by 2024 will be using low-code or no-code tools.

A recent study by Zapier finds 82 percent of respondents confirmed they started using no-code tools during the global pandemic, between 2020 and 2022. This has created the largest boom of no-code use in history with 85 percent of respondents saying they plan to implement additional no-code tools into their personal or business practices within the next 365 days.
What's more 90 percent of no-code users think their company has been able to grow faster due to employing the technology.
