"Check Point said it had stopped [the new variant] from damaging computers by activating a "kill switch" in the software."

Remember: The best protection against Ransomware is to backup:

"Fasthosts left some customers without access to their backups for roughly six days – after it tore down systems it feared were vulnerable to the WannaCry malware.

The Brit web hosting biz confirmed to The Register that it pulled the plug on gear hosting some of its customer's online storage service last Friday. These systems were running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, which is no longer officially supported and is potentially susceptible to the WannaCrypt ransomware that did the rounds on Friday.

In other words, worm smashes Server 2003 machines worldwide, Fasthosts pulls plug on Server 2003 hardware, customers go for days without access to online data..."

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/05/17/fasthosts_wannacrypt_backups/

Revised advice: The best protection against Ransomware is to backup on two or more cloud or external hard drives that are kept unconnected to the backed-up system.

hawki learned this the hard way with an Iomega external hard drive that failed after seven months. Many peeps are either under the delusion that external back up hard drives do not fail or don't even think about the possibility.

hawki has recently been shopping for a new ext HDD on Amazon. After reading reviews for products from all the major makers, its is readily apparent that they all manufacture their fair share of lemons, some more than others, but all nonetheless.
