Another fallout from this wanna cry is the spawning of info-links in a number of threads throughout this board:D

Here, a spam email from Bitdefender. The antivirus people want their share of the goods, man.

Eset Smart Security users were protected via its network protection prior to their signature update which occurred within an hour or so after the initial outbreak detection on the 12th:

I'm pretty sure the government were going to change all NHS software to Ubuntu at one stage. But that mysteriously all fell through. A couple of years ago when I was still having intensive physiotherapy the computer I used in therapy ran XP.

This whole fiasco is down to government underfunding for ideological reasons IMO.

The UK government is claiming otherwise, I hope there is an independent enquiry...

NHS was repeatedly warned of cyber-attack, says Fallon

"The NHS has been given about £50m to improve its computer systems, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon says."

"Hackers in China [failed in attempt to] try to seize control of WannaCry ransomware's 'kill switch'

The attempt fails but could have allowed the kill switch to be disabled, expert says...

...The security analyst ["The Accidental Hero"], who has asked to remain anonymous but uses the name MalwareTech on social media, said he had been notified of an apparent attempt by someone else to take control of [his "kill switch]...website.

'Looks like someone in China attempted to steal the domain,' he wrote on Twitter..."

Going by "The Accidental Hero's" Live Attack Map, it appears that wannacry, while still having a sizeable presence, has slowed to a relative "trickle."

Be On Guard for "wannacry stage two."

Not a bad job for a 22-year-old self-taught computer expert, who loves pizza and surfing (waves) and lives with his parents.

If what I've read was true, it wasn't skill but just luck. On the other hand being lucky doesn't hurt

Unless most peeps in The UK decided to sleep-in or have been instructed not to boot their PCs this AM, looks like the UK dodged a bullet -- fairly quiet atm.

"China, Addicted to Bootleg Software, Reels From Ransomware Attack

HONG KONG — China is home to the world’s largest group of internet users, a thriving online technology scene and rampant software piracy that encapsulates its determination to play by its own set of digital rules...

A large number of computers running pirated versions of Windows in China and Russia probably contributed to the cyberattack’s spread, according to the Finnish cybersecurity company F-Secure. Pirated software tends to be more vulnerable to malware and viruses. Because pirated software usually is not registered with the developer, its users often miss out on major security patches that could ward off attacks...

A study last year by BSA, a trade association of software vendors, found that in China, the share of unlicensed software reached 70 percent in 2015..."

"Virulent WCry ransomware worm may have North Korea’s fingerprints on it

Identical code ties Friday’s attacks to hacks on Sony Pictures and $1bn bank heist...

    The potential repercussions are staggering.

The Official Directive of The US Cyber Command is that a cyber attack can be considered an Act of War and The US as a member of NATO is pledged to defend NATO's Members - an attack on one is an attack on all.

North Korea ain't on the most-favored list of anyone I know atm.
