    Hello ~

I've been battling with Zestyfind for weeks now. No clue where I picked it up, but it seems to be here to stay. Hope you can help me get rid of it! I'm a definite greenhorn here, but did a search on zestyfind and followed the instructions posted at https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=15913 .

Last month I installed Pest Patrol and Spyware Blaster 3.1, but Zesty still appears). :doubt:

Tonight I downloaded and run both Ad-Aware 6.0 and SpyBot - Search and Destroy 1.2. Then downloaded and ran HijackThis. Using the results below. can you guide me through whatever needs to be done to 1) get rid of Zestyfind and 2) keep it gone?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi North,

Can you do a Find files for *.cpy.dll
Let me know what you find.

Unrelated, but check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocach...etup1.0.0.6.cab

    Hi Pieter ~

A “Find” for *.cpy.dll and turned up MQG118.cpy.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Followed your instructions on having HijackThis fix those two items. After rebooting, here’s my latest HijackThis log:

When I opened my browser after rebooting, good old Zestyfind was the first thing to hit my screen. I’ll be glad to be rid of that thing!!

Please let me know what to do next.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi North,

Before you follow these instructions I have to warn you that they are experimental.
I will try to repair any damages it might do, but you might end up having to format. The alternative is to wait until a tested solution for this malware is found for Windows 98. Sofare we only have a working solution for Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro.

    Download and unzip http://download.broadbandmedic.com/VbStuff/KillBox.zip
You will need it later on.

Also download the L2M.txt file I attached to this post and save it as L2M.reg

Click Start > Run > system.ini to edit the c:\windows\system.ini file.
Once it is open, change the line shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe. What you are doing here is changing the default shell from the Windows Explorer to the old Windows Program Manager shell.

Reboot Windows. It should now successfully boot with no errors into an empty Program Manager shell.

    Use Kilbox like this:
Close all open Windows, open KillBox and under Fix L2M>>Kill VX2.BetterInternet.
    Your Computer will Shut down..
On rebooting, these 2 files should be deleted:
    MQG118.cpy.dll
    MQG118.dll

Then doubleclick the L2M.reg you saved. Confirm you want to merge it with the registry

Reboot again and hit the F8 key to bring up a Boot Menu. Choose Command Prompt and boot to the command prompt. Once there, type edit c:\windows\system.ini and, once it is open, change the line shell=progman.exe back to shell=explorer.exe. Save and exit the file. You have now set the shell back to the original value.

Reboot the computer and everything should work fine now.

    Regards,

    Pieter
