Forcefield sounds interesting. Has anyone uninstalled it for any reason yet? ZoneAlarm has a rep for products difficult to uninstall entirely in a straight forward easy way.

I got altiris via a url in a thread here. I tried wading through their website and gave up. If I recall correctly, I went to download and selected the Software Virtualization Solution 2.1 from the pop up list. It says 120 evaluation but it's really free and a license is provided after signing up for it.

    http://www.altiris.com/Download.aspx

You can also get it here. It says shareware, but if you read down you'll see that it's free for personal use and you get a license.

Being Symantec hasn't bothered me, and doesn't seem to have bothered altiris SVS. It's been good, stable, and I like being able to keep software in a virtual environment. All I have to do is bring up altiris, click activate layer, and the program loads. I have 4 that I use daily, and all are saved in virtual. No reason, really, other than that a couple are very large, over a Gig each, and now I can use them with a couple of clicks and at the same time not have either on my hard drive.

Yes. Don't use Altiris for testing security software or any software that works deeply embedded in the OS.

It uninstalls without any problems, unlike the firewall where if you delete the temp uninstall file you have to reinstall once again.

No dangerous bugs for me except slow performance

IMO will be great for power browsing for those who visit the dark side or are a bit paranoid about security.

After you install free for personal use Altiris, get a plugin called Trinket,a front end which makes usage a lot easier.
    http://www.svsdownloads.com/

Turn on Trinket and create a new virtual layer for each required app.-install the real software and its there virtually until deleted from Altiris.

The layers arent deleted by rebooting

Thereafter when Trinket/Altiris is turned on,you just activate/deactivate whichever virtual app. you need.

Its different for example to Returnil,in that the whole system isnt virtualised, only specific apps or data.

    A test;

edit-sorry Chuck, you already have posted a lot of this!

Aigle-this may be a part answer, according to PC Mag. test" Security programs may report rootkit-like behavior."

The program works by creating layers (where applications write their files and registry keys), which can be activated/deactivated at any time. Imagine activating a layer containing SSM, it would be impossible to load kernel drivers, service, etc.
Altiris isn't security software. It's good if want Office 2003, Office 2007 and OpenOffice installed on the same box without conflicts and activated only when you need them.

Not a problem. I'd never heard of trinket. I just open altiris, click on activate layer and go. I'll have to look into it.
