Tile, the company best known for its lineup of key- and bag-tracking Bluetooth fobs, has ambitions to track more of your belongings. The company’s new credit card-sized Tile Slim is designed to track your wallet, while the small, puck-shaped Tile Sticker is meant to be stuck onto laptops, TV remotes, skateboards, and bicycles. Tile is also updating its Mate and Pro key trackers with new models which offer improved range.

It’s a little quieter than the standard Tile Mate key fob, but it was loud enough that I could still hear it ringing at the bottom of a packed bag (although, granted, this may have been a struggle in a louder room).
Although it’s small, it’s still a good quarter inch thick, and you might have to be prepared to get creative to get it to attach to your more oddly sized possessions. The loudness of its speaker seemed about the same as the Tile Slim.

Tile’s new lineup of trackers is available starting today. The $39.99 Tile Sticker pack contains two of the trackers, and there’s also a four-pack available for $59.99. There are also various multipacks available which include combinations of the four trackers, all of which can be found on the Tile website.

As promised, Google Assistant can now help find your Tile trackers with very little effort. Link the Bluetooth gadget in the Google Home app, set up Voice Match in Assistant and you can ask the voice helper to locate your trackers (and hopefully, the items attached to them) using a simple sentence rather than adding a prefix like "ask Tile to" every time. You can tell Assistant to ring your keys or find your bag.

This works on any Assistant-capable device, although you will need the Tile app on Android or iOS for the initial setup. While Assistant's support for Bluetooth trackers is still pretty slim (Chipolo is the only other brand we know to work at present), this is still a pretty big addition.

Tile's trackers already help you find lost items, but now they might help you before the wave of panic hits. The company is relaunching Smart Alerts in beta to automatically warn when you've left a tracked item behind if it's been there for at least five minutes.
You'll need a Premium subscription ($30 per year or $3 per month), but it might be a small price to pay if you can't bear the thought of leaving a valuable item alone for more than a few minutes. The beta will be available in December.

False alarms shouldn't be a problem, thankfully. You can define "safe zones" for items to determine whether or not you should get an alert. You may want your coat to send an alert when you leave it at the pub, but not when you leave it at home on a warm summer's day.
Not everyone needs these kind of immediate responsiveness, but there's certainly pressure for Tile to introduce features like this. [...] The new Smart Alerts could give iPhone users a reason to choose Tile over Apple's "default" option.

Google Assistant's feature set is getting an addition today, as the Mountain View giant announced that the smart digital assistant is getting integration with Tile trackers. With the new integration, users can ask the Assistant to locate or ring their trackers, making it easier to find small objects - or even big ones, if you're good enough at losing things.

For those unaware, Tile trackers are small square-shaped devices that have Bluetooth connectivity. The goal is that you can attach them to any of your personal belongings, and thanks to the Bluetooth connection with your smartphone, users can easily know where a tracked object is.

Tile integration with the Assistant could be Google's way to prepare for the rumored launch of Apple's own trackers, which may be called AirTags. Given the deep integration Apple devices tend to have between each other, it seems logical that a similar feature would be available on Apple's ecosystem, and it may be good for Google to pre-empt that.

Bluetooth-powered lost item finder Tile is expanding on its two-year-old partnership with strategic investor Comcast to help customers find misplaced items around their homes. The two companies first announced their intention to partner in early 2018, and later that year introduced a way for Comcast users to locate lost items using their Xfinity X1 Voice Remote. Now, Comcast is adding more set-top boxes and xFi Gateways into the mix as access points.

The companies announced today that select Comcast X1 and Flex set-top boxes as well as xFi Gateways will be able to work as extensions to the Tile network. Specifically, this includes the newer Xfinity devices like the xFi Advanced Gateway, and Xi5, Xi6 and XG1v4 devices, Tile tells us.
This means Comcast’s boxes can supplement or even take the place of the Tile mobile app in terms of being an access point used to look for a lost Tile device, when an item goes missing.

Now, customers can say things like “Xfinity Home, find my keys” to have the Tile make its distinctive ringing sound so the lost item can be found.

Tile, the company known for helping people find their lost belongings using little Bluetooth trackers, has announced a partnership with Intel to bring location-based technology directly to laptops.

The Intel tie-up builds on Tile’s existing partnerships with Bluetooth chipmakers such as Qualcomm, Dialog Semiconductor, Silicon Labs, and Toshiba — allowing manufacturers to develop devices that work with Tile’s tracking smarts out of the box.
Laptops are a relatively new area for Tile, but back in January it announced a partnership with HP to bake tracking smarts directly into HP’s new flagship Elite Dragonfly laptop.

Tile said the fruits of its Intel partnership will be available for PC-makers later in 2020 and that the two companies are already working “closely” with manufacturers to enable the functionality.

Tile, the company that makes trackers to monitor your stuff, is offering a new premium subscription plan starting today that’ll allow people to claim money for lost items.

The plan, called Premium Protect, costs $99.99 per year and includes all of the perks of its premium subscription, including free battery replacements and a 30-day location history as well as item reimbursement up to $1,000. Premium, the original plan, is still available and costs $29.99 per year or $2.99 per month.
Premium Protect members can register most items to qualify it for reimbursement, and Tile is working with a company called Cover Genius to follow through and approve lost item requests.

With this plan, Tile is clearly trying to signal its belief in the reliability of its network, which isn’t just built on physical trackers people latch onto their items but also includes devices with Tile support directly built in.
While Tile has mostly dominated the Bluetooth tracker space, Apple has been rumored for months to be entering the market, possibly with its own AirTag tracker. An insurance plan could help Tile stand out compared to whatever Apple launches, if and when it happens.

Samsung seems to be close to launching a new Tile-like device for tracking lost items. The tracker, likely called the Galaxy SmartTag, has been leaking out over the past month, and there’s some speculation it could be announced alongside the Galaxy S21 later in January.

The Galaxy SmartTag would use Bluetooth to connect with nearby devices and broadcast its location, so owners could find it later if they misplace whatever it’s attached to. It’ll be powered by a replaceable button cell battery, according to a regulatory filing spotted by GSMArena, so you won’t have to throw it out and buy a new one when the battery dies.

Samsung’s tracker sounds a lot like a Tile, and it’ll apparently look a lot like one, too.
So far, it’s not clear that Samsung is doing anything out of the ordinary here — this seems to be a pretty standard fare item tracker.

Mostly, this seems like more bad news for Tile, since Apple is rumored to have an item tracker in the works, too. That could mean two major new competitors in one year, if both of these devices actually ship.

Ultra-wideband technology is available on newer iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models and select Android-powered devices, including more recent devices from Samsung.

Like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, UWB is a short-range, wireless communication protocol, but one that operates at very high frequencies. It can be used to capture spatial and directional data, which is where it comes in handy to lost-item finders, like Tile’s trackers.
Based on Tile’s internal concept art for the device (shown below), Tile’s UWB model will look similar to its other small trackers, like the Tile Mate and Tile Pro.

In a nutshell: Samsung has two tracking devices coming out in 2021. The Galaxy SmartTag is a BLE fob launching on January 29 for $29.99. The Galaxy SmartTag+ adds Ultra-Wideband support, with availability coming later this year at $39.99. The one caveat would be that SmartTags will only work with Samsung Galaxy devices.

Samsung threw its hat in the ring on Thursday to challenge Tile with its object tracking solution, the Galaxy SmartTag. The fob easily attaches to a set of keys or stashes away in a backpack pocket to help users locate their belongings if they lose track of them.

As far as innovations, Galaxy SmarTags are not all that different from Tile's trackers. It uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to pair with your phone. Samsung's SmartThings app allows users to see the last known general location of their fob. As they get closer, a gauge will show the BLE signal strength to narrow down the search. If all else fails, users can command the Galaxy SmartTag to ping audibly.

Another difference, and arguably a more significant one, is that Galaxy SmartTags will only work with Samsung Galaxy phones. Even though the SmartThings app will run on any Android Phone, it will not detect your SmartTag on non-Samsung devices.

The CEO of tracking company Tile says that revenues are up "despite the unfair competition" from Apple's equivalent device, AirTags.

After Apple released its AirTag tracking system in May 2021, CJ Prober, CEO of existing rival Tile, said his company welcomed the competition. However, "it needs to be fair," and Prober also expressed antitrust concerns.
Now according to Wired, Prober says Tile is doing well against the AirTags. "We've sold over 40 million Tiles," he said. "Revenue was up in the first half of the year."

"Third-party product activations, a big focus of ours, we're up over 200 percent year over year," he continued. "Business is good. We're seeing really strong business momentum — despite the unfair competition from Apple."

"Look at how Apple differentiates AirTags over Tile — it's all platform capabilities that they've reserved for themselves," he said. "The seamless activation [for example] is not available to third parties."

Tile will continue to be operated as a standalone brand under Tile CEO CJ Prober, but Tile says that when the acquisition is completed, it will be able to leverage Life360's 33 million smartphone users to grow Tile's Finding network by 10x. Tile's network is the equivalent of Apple's Find My network, leveraging nearby devices to locate lost items.

Life360 has what it calls a "family safety platform" that allows family members to keep tabs on one another with tracking software on smartphones. It's primarily used by parents to track their children and teenagers, and it has raised privacy concerns.

With the Tile acquisition, Life360 founder Chris Hulls says that Life360 will be able to provide an "all-encompassing solution" for locating people, pets, and things with cross-platform tracking and combined service for tracking items and people.
