Here's my logfile from this morning's scan. Thank you for any help you can provide. (And for what it's worth, over the weekend I began having problems with searching and visiting web pages. I get "page cannot be displayed" errors frequently, and if I hit "refresh", the page will appear. I've also got the annoying Lycos search window that appears whenever I attempt a search with my google toolbar browser. Can you teach me how to rid the computer of this?

    Thank you!
    Greg

    Hi Greg McNair,

Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C5183ABC-EB6E-4E05-B8C9-500A16B6CF94} - C:\Program Files\SEP\sep.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: Band Class - {C5183ABC-EB6E-4E05-B8C9-500A16B6CF94} - C:\Program Files\SEP\sep.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HozD7Hn] C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\HozD7Hn.exe

    Then reboot into safe mode
    and delete:
    C:\Program Files\SEP <= entire folder

Then (still in safe mode) use the Disk Cleanup Utility to empty all your Temp folders.

Post a new log when you are done, so we can see if everything worked out as planned.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Pieter, I followed your advice to the letter, but was unable to run the disk cleanup utility in safe mode. The first time I tried it, it started, but wouldn't continue. I left it for a couple of hours, and no change in status. I tried running it a couple more times, and it wouldn't even appear in a window as being "in process". I have not run the cleanup utility in regular (non-safe) mode either. BTW, I also unzipped the program in it's own folder as you said.

Here's the new logfile. Thank you for your help with this. You're quite a patient person to be helping strangers like this!

    Hi Greg,

With the DiskCleanup I was aiming to get rid of:
    C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\HozD7Hn.exe
    in particular.

The Local Settings folder is hidden by default.
To "unhide" hidden files and folders:
Launch My Computer from the Desktop Icon.
    Select View, Details.
    Select the Folders button.
Select Tools, Folder Options. Then select the View Tab. Select the Show hidden files and folders radio button is selected
and that the Hide file extensions for known file types check box is unchecked. Once this is done, select Apply and then
Like Current Folder (located near the top of the Folder Options box). Then select OK.

Once you have these showing please empty this folder C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp
Do NOT delete the folder itself, just everything in it.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Pieter, sorry for not getting back to you and following up on your advice until now, but I have been out of town. I have done as you advised, and there's a few files I can't delete. Here they are:

    - IadHide4.dll
    - ~PST8914.tmp
    - and a couple of files that appear to be related to vehicle searches in Auto Trader Online. Everything else was "deletable" with exception to the folders in which the above named files reside.

What's next? Want me to run another log and post it so we can be sure it's all clean? Thanks again!

    Greg
