Here’s a device we didn’t have on our radar – a new Google Nest thermostat. It is now, as the device just stopped through the FCC for approval.

The device is listed as original equipment under model number G4CVZ, so we do believe this is new. Not much is provided that spoils the device outside of that, we just know it’s called a “thermostat,” that Google is making it, it has 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, and 60GHz radar for something.

UPDATE: As was pointed out to me on Twitter, that 60GHz radar could be a Soli-like implementation, where you could be able to control your new thermostat with gestures. This is similar radar to what we saw in the Pixel 4 line-up.

Google and Nest are probably due for a new smart thermostat. The newest thermostat from Nest is the Thermostat E, which was announced back in 2017. The flagship Nest Smart Thermostat (3rd Gen) was introduced in 2015.

New Google Nest Thermostat gets certified with 60GHz transmitter, possibly for air gestures

As Ars Technica points out, Google previously received FCC approval to use Soli in the 57- to 64GHz frequency band.

Using a Nest thermostat is already intuitive and adjusting the temperature is as easy as turning the dial, but adding gestures would make interacting with the Nest that much easier. Imagine using a hand wave to turn down the temperature in your home.

Update: $129 Price, Soli Hand Gestures
One product on our radar that we haven’t seen yet is the rumored new entry to the Nest Thermostat line. According to Bloomberg, its release is on track in the coming weeks, and it could be priced at just $129. In comparison, the 3rd-gen Nest Thermostat costs $249 while the Nest Thermostat E costs $169, meaning the new model will be significantly more affordable.

Even though it has a cheaper price and a plastic casing, it’ll still pack some new features. As rumored, the new Nest Thermostat is expected to feature a Soli radar system for hand gestures. Users will be able to swipe their hand up or down to control the temperature or move their hand toward or away to navigate menus.

Google on Monday announced a new $129 Nest Thermostat, its first update in two years.
It’s a little different than the $249 Nest Learning Thermostat and $169 Nest Thermostat E.

Nest has become synonymous with smart thermostats, and allows people to control the temperature of their home from a phone.
The new model doesn’t automatically learn and adjust your temperature, but it can recommend schedules to help users save on energy costs. Google said it estimates it can save people 10% to 12% on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills.

It uses Google’s Soli radar, first introduced in the Pixel 4 phone, which can detect when someone walks by and will automatically light up the screen.
