As Alexander Pope said in 1733, “Hope springs eternal in the human breast.”

When I make mistakes (and I most certainly do), then I act accordingly and apologize -- see my posts #72 and #181 in this thread, for example. This is one characteristic that distinguishes professionals from pundits, in my opinion.

From my own limited perspective, concerning the Dennis Labs test, there are only two meritorious insights that have surfaced in this thread: (1) the unanswered question by Pbust about how the live web connection was simulated, and (2) the disagreement on whether or not a sample size of 40 test cases was sufficient. Almost everything else has been innuendo and groundless suspicion about Symantec and its motivations, unfortunately. If I have missed other noteworthy insights, please correct my omissions to properly summarize this thread (and hopefully thereby encourage it to be closed).

    :)

Gee you mean the reputation that they have gained over the years comes back to haunt them. Naaaaa how could that happen. :cautious:

Yes, that’s precisely what I mean. For example, Symantec's reputation includes being named in 2009 as one of the "World's Most Ethical Companies" in the computer software category by the Ethisphere Institute, “a leading international think-tank dedicated to the creation, advancement and sharing of best practices in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, anti-corruption and sustainability.”

That’s what you mean, too -- right? Or, did you intend something else?

If past reputations were a guide to current performance nobody would fly in McDonell Douglas built airliners:-they used to fall out of the sky with alarming regularity, but things do change!

I Agree things change. But not overnight when you have a long history of a smeared rep your insane to think people will just forget.

I don't think it is overnight, been improving over last 3 yrs or so,nis is a nice product nowadays but like you say their reputation from a few years ago stands against them in some peoples eyes, originally when Norton was Norton they produced some very good stuff, always a pig to uninstall though

He is not a "founder member". Dennis Publishing joined a year after AMTSO was formed.

Where did this assumption come from? ICSA Labs is not associated with any publication, therfore no "av editor partnership."

"it is the case for most tests done with av editors partnerships like vb100 and ICSA in particular.

That's interesting because the published attendee list for the first "official" meeting in Bilbao Spain, January 21-22, 2008 does not list anyone from DPL attending. So I guess if you were there after that meeting you can still consider yourself a founder?

I just gave trend micro a whirl on the malware domain list (MDL) and trend micro caught zero of the zero day (punnery alert!). Now, maybe during the test the zero day stuff was different. However, immunet caught 95% of it. However, FakeSmoke roque av was not caught by either trend nor immunet.

Most people here do not give much respect to trend micro so it was very interesting to see them on this list as being good against zero day.

This could totally be different with a different set of malware. I guess the main point is learn to be safe and don't rely on the AV to fix your unsafe browsing habits. Then again telling that to people is a whole nother story people are to fascinated with big red buttons that say push! :argh:

The fact that the excellent performance of Norton Internet Security 2010 documented in the report by Dennis Technology Lab is mirrored in the independent findings of AV-Comparatives (see here) and of AV-Test (see here) is exceptionally strong evidence against the conjecture that Symantec “influenced” the methodology or the outcome of the test by conducted Dennis Technology Lab.

    Quod erat demonstrandum.

So I would like to begin and conclude at the same time, we need exactly this methodology of testing like denis labs performed + much higher amount of malware specimens + specific config. needed for sec. solutions to run properly (e.g. in the cloud based systems), but these kind of tests should be performed group of professionals which will be payed from anonymous donations in order tests to be performed in independent manner ...

At last, who will do this? :doubt:
some people from linux community :argh:
