Yes, I would be interested in that as well. I understand rule making under NetVeda to a degree (thanks to Outpost) but still have a few grey areas.

  3. My general setup is:
Under security.....Internet Security...All checked except "Activate component
    learning"

Under trusted apps... Deny....Spooler subsystem app
    Deny.....Generic Host Process
    Deny.....Services and Controller app
    Ask......Internet explorer...if using different browser

    Default User.............Application Control..I Checked off everything I don't use

    Chat...DHCP-BOTH...FTP-BOTH... ICMP...IMAP4-BOTH
    NNTP-BOTH...POP3-BOTH...SMTP..BOTH..SNMP
    TELNET-BOTH...AND WINDOWS MSG.

    Default User..............Under Web Filters...Allow Web sites...Msn.com...for
    Hotmail
    Block Web site...googkle.com for
    New exploit.

I am on a solo computer...and don't use POP3 or SMTP so make
    adjustments as per your PC

By using a different browser than IE....and by denying or having IE ask
you should have a pretty tight PC

Reading through this thread it would seem that I dismissed this f/w too readily and looks like it should have a second chance.

Instead I installed Kerio 4, and true it does use a lot of memory, namely 10,416; 5,304; 7,368. Also I see it has logged a lot of page faults today 994,500 (rapidly rising - now 1,014,000); 6,812; 12,471. I don't know enough about this but assume it is not good.

Be interesting to know how how Netvada compares.

That's nothing.. I tried the recent Kerio 4.2 beta 5/6 and they used a total of 42 mb of ram. I hope that isn't any indication of a trend... :p

    ipcsvc = 17,648
    ipctray = 13,396

7 days 5 hours since last reboot maybe I need to do so?? :doubt: Why the differnce? o_O

actually i havent done anything drastic, similiar to your setup..i will show the differences..here it goes

    configuration
-mine too is a solo pc .so installed routing configuration is -none
-alert reports-enabled,allmost all of them,so that i can see all the alerts in the logs and diagnose a problem in case one arises.
-network activity reports-internet adapters only,as i am on dialup.

no change in password and optimization tab

    security
internet security tab- same as your setup
content security-1-hide user identifiable information in browser requests-checked
    2-block active code checked
3-all other except disable content encoding are checked..

i have entered sites that need the above two to function properly in the webfilters tab under default user in allow sites..i have found this easier rather than messing with groups..
adv internet firewall-created a rule to allow dns traffic as per directions from netveda forums

i also had to create a group download managers and allow full access to that group in default user/app control to avoid that fdm issue that i mentioned in other thread..this persist in the new version too sadly.. :(

    default user
    -not enabled pics ratings
    -no time restrictions
-erase content is also not enabled
    -webfilters-block website groups/advertisements is checked..
-in app control-blocked icmp, chat, windows messenger ,etc

also created a group as explorer and blocked it from network access as you and no13 have suggested..

    trusted app
-allow-i have alliowed generic host process ,and services and controller app-dont know what is the deal here-when i used za both needed access for proper web page loading so i enabled here too..
    -allow for opera

-deny-i have no spooler sub system coz i have removed outlook(this is an nlited version of xp tweaked to maxx and removed all the crap)
    deny-system,and all other crap
    ie-set on ask..for windows updates..

    ok thats it for now
i think screen shots would have explained it better ;)

    Re: NetVeda 3.61 ARP query

    Can this be achieved through

    LAN Computers/New
    Select computer names
    Find name

It will then come up with the MAC address for it.

Am I going in the right direction here or am I missing something?

  12. Thanks Clansman....It realy takes much longer to type than to do it.

It only takes a few minutes to do when you are used to the lay-out.

I like running leak tests....to see how NetVeda realy pins points what is trying
to launch...It is very close to Outpost in that respect with the three choices
you have, and with the details it provides helps one to make an intelligent
decision if a real event is happening.

I also like the way it is a very forgiving FW..in that if you make a bad rule or
two...usually just a simple uncheck or delete will get you back in running order.
I'm sure we have all had that problem where we have messed up something
and had a lock out, or had to uninstall/install to get back on line.

It comes out of the box very tight...has many many features, and in my
non FW guru eyes...one of the easiest to figure out.

I've posted before than my mem. usage is on a par with everyone elses.

So... What about NetVeda HD activity?
I am asking because I see that nearly every new "security" apps doing strange things with disks. I hate this.
I’ve just tried Jetico and it is very nice and ready to be "famous like Kerio2" but... HDD led do not stop blinking with it :(
BTW: The same problem with KAV5 Pro. Every 5 sec. it is opening 14 files in it’s reports dir. Just to be sure there are some? ;) Version 4.5 stays silent despite checking for viruses of course.

I wouldn't worry much about HD activity. I used to watch stuff like that too, but decided that even if my HD got worn out, they're cheap, so I'd just get a new one for $100. Big deal. But odds are your HD will last forever anyhow.

I've tried to install this firewall 5 times now with the same result.
When I right click on the tray icon and choose administration, the program instantly crashes with an error message that goes something like "ipcLAM.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close".
Also in the tray icon menu there are some greyed out options and one which says login. If I click on that I get a password prompt but I don't know the password obviously.
I've tried downloading the file on 3 occasions.
Before each install I have disabled as many programs as possible from the task manager, as well removing all traces of previous firewalls, including registry entries.
Has anyone got any idea what's going on?

What would the setup be for this fw, while using a router and having three pc's and one printer setup on the local LAN?

    Thanks,

    Jag

For the host machine connected to the Router, select router config in NetVedam and make sure to put all the LAN machine address in the LAN section.

So your saying I only need this firewall on only one of the three machines?

Wow, that is great if that is the case. :D

Are there any tutorials and/or screenshots on the setup Arup?

    Thanks for your reply.

    Best Regards,

    Jag

    Jaguar,

You are welcome........the other LAN machines will have total inbound protection but not outbound, in that case, you will have to install NetVeda individually on them as well. The accompanying PDF is pretty good in exlaining NetVeda rules in detail and there is always the NetVeda forum for any further help.

    Arup,

Again, thanks very much for all your help with this. I think I will check out Netveda tomorrow when I am just a little more awake. ;)

As for the PDF, is it included as part of the installation? I downloaded it from download.com. Or is this available on the Netveda website? If it is I did not notice it.

Sorry if this has been answered before this.

    Best Regards and Thanks Again!

    Jag

    Jaguar,

The PDF is included in the installation file, also take a good look at the above posts by NetVeda veterans like JW, Clansmann etc. some real good rules there.
