    Hi all,

I have 2 computers (XP home) that have locked up because of a stupidity induced installation of Avast over and existing AVG installation. my AVG installation subscription had expired and I was trying out free products, for some reason, I misunderstood the Avast instructions and confused them with an antivirus scanner program. Is it possible for a professional computer repair person AKA super-geek to fix this type of problem WITHOUT a clean reinstall (neither can get into Safe Mode)o_Oo_Oo_O

One of the systems (the one I am typing into now) had a second disk drive with an old XP installation that works fine, I was thinking that since I can use windows explorer to view the contents of the bad drive, one might be able to edit the bad installation on that drive. The C:\ drive appears only as "IMAGE" and has 0 bytes which is not true. My old "My Documents" which live on that old C drive are not accessible.

    Opinions?

If no one knows for sure, maybe someone could point me to a forum where someone might know.

    Thanks!

    Bill

If you have a cd/dvd burner, you could burn a rescue cd/dvd but it might cost you money but surely less than an IT guy to come over.

I have no software in mind but i am sure many people here can tell you what they use and reccommend.

What I really need, is some software that can find and copy all of the documents from my XP installations. I would prefer software that uninstalls my old AV software and gets me up and running.

I just don't want to lug both machine somewhere and find neither can be done no way no how.

    know'd wad ah mean?

What happens when you try and boot (either pc) in safe made? If you can get as far as the options menu, have you tried the "last known good" option?

Try this to see if you can get into normal mode press several times on the F8 button before the windows splash screen once you are in the advanced startup menu select safe mode log in with your account. Now press the windows button together with r now type msconfig press enter select diagnostic startup and reboot your pc. Normally you will get into windows again and try to run the uninstaller of Avast or AVG. Once you have done that don't forget once you have done that press the windows button together with r now type msconfig press enter now select normal startup and reboot your pc.
