    Work from safe mode.

    Under Boot.ini tab it says:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Is this what you are looking for?

I did not change any jumper before mounting the drive. I was told not needed. And the user manual at Samsung webpage indicate that no need to change jumper settings on SATA-drive. Just connect. I notice both internal drives are set as master.
The power and data cabel are connected and the drive does spin.

Is the CMOS properly setup? I guess this is the same as BIOS settings. And I guess it is ok, or else it would not work from the beginning.

I tried to run the diagnostic program Hutil, but it did not recognise any hdd at all. Maybe I did something wrong?

I have not tried to remove the drive yet. That may be my next step. To find out if my computer work after removing the new drive, I guess I will have to format my second drive and install XP on this.

    From my earlier post:

Right now I see 2 different solutions:

    1. Some kind of low level erase of entire hdd (Samsung 500 GB system drive). And then reinstall XP and BING. Or first try to restore an image to see if it works now.

    2. Remove both internal drives. Put back in my 250 GB Seagate and make it my main/system drive. Install XP on this. (And maybe restore one of the images to this drive). And later on erase/format Samsung 500 GB and put in and make it my second internal drive.

I visited Samsung webpage. There was a utility called Hutil. It includes Erasehdd. I downloaded to old laptop. Extract it to floppy diskette. Tried to run it on desktop, but it did not recognise any hdd at all. Is supposed to run from DOS. Only way I know to enter DOS is to start XP, start-run-cmd. Did not work, and computer freeze.

Should I try to download this killdisk? Or boot from Windows CD and format entire drive?

I dont know what would be the best thing to do next. And I dont know when. Within the next couple of hours or later. Been awake for a long time and have to go to work in 3-4 hours. Its going to be a really nice day:) I almost fall asleep right now in front of the desktop with the laptop in my hands:)

In the control panel under administrative tools, computer management. storage, disk management, what is the state of the drives on your computer? Healthy?

Under the circumstances, I would be tempted to try this. :D

Run scandisk on both those drives and check for errors. Remove any programs other than those you need to run your computer. Start with the bare minimum and work your way from there.

Scandisk pictorial. I asked about the floppy in case we needed an alternate medium for Samsung's utility.

This page cover's the download Hutil204_for_CDROM_Drive.zip and instruction's for running the "self diagnostic, entire disk surface scan test." Use the small, standalone BurnCDCC after unzipping the iso. Be sure to enable drive write for the cd-rom from it's properties page (rt clk in my computer), recording tab. You MUST also remember to change the *boot order* in BIOS to be able to boot from either floppy or cd!

You should print the page at Samsung or jot down these direction's. Information as what to do per screen will be shown at screen's bottom. Navigate using the arrow key's for selection, 'enter' to execute. From what I determine you need run only ONE test, and ONLY your Samsung disk using this utility.

    • First screen cover's the disclaimer. Accept.

    • Using the arrow key's, select drive.

    • Highlight 'tool' on the main menu, select 'self diagnostic.'

    • Answer 'yes' when asked to scan the entire disk surface.

    • If you see "to continue, press any key ..." upon test completion, CONGRATULATION'S!

I have no idea how long this test will take. Judging from their example I'm guessing in proportion to size. Locate the test file back in window's? by entering > ht*.log in the search field. At a later point, before reinstalling fresh again, and after possibly gathering more information, this cd claim's to be able to erase your entire drive (Samsung ONLY) from the tool, erase hd selection.

Killdisk run's regardless of disk brand (and on my side prior to formatting).

Update: I had a chance to make sure both Samsung's latest boot-iso and @ctive's killdisk would run after burning, but it wasn't Terabyte's tool that handled the process. I instead used the utility that accompanied the a@k-iso (screenie). It not only burned it's own offering, but went right ahead and burned Samsung's iso as well! Both boot tepe so you should be good to go. Still, I'm sure either burner would work.

    Thanks. Scandisk running now. C-drive.

I used the floppy when I tried to run Samsung utility Hutil. It did not see my drives.

Scandisk finish. Could not read the full report because the computer restarted. But read that some corrections were done. Computer still freeze.

Dont know if it helps but I could run scandisk on D-drive too.

I just realised you edited your post.

I dont think this old laptop has ability to burn this utility to cd, but I downloaded it. Moved it to usb-stick. I go to my stepfather after work. Make cd. Bring it home and try it. (I borrow this old laptop and the new laptop I had earlier today from my stepfather)

The time is 6 in the morning here in Norway. I go to work at 7. Nothing more to do right now.

I will come back in 14-18 hours and tell you what is going on.

I must say to you guys: THANK YOU SO MUCH :thumb:

Whatever you are going to do now enjoy yourself and have a good time:)

    I'm back.

Samsung utility on CD work. Read Surface Scan been running for 1 hour and 10-12 minutes now. Progress: 58 %.

The first 6 tests all passed:

    1. Read DMA
    2. Check S.M.A.R.T.
    3. Spin Down/Up
    4. Simple Surface Scan
    5. Write Verify
    6. Random Surface Scan

I come back when testing complete.

Item's throwing a red flag which atm am not sure of without first referencing on the outside.

"I notice both internal drives are set as master."
Got me! As I said earlier I haven't read much of this master, slave bit.

    "Is the CMOS properly setup?"
You know exactly what your BIOS is or, you'd like a utility?

"I have not tried to remove the drive yet."
This mean you'd have to install xp on your old disk before proceeding again? Are you up on your system right now or someone else's? My guess to allow running under normal boot is disabling somebody in msconfig. Maybe what was suggested in your other thread, Cyberhawk? You happen to have a copy of hjt onboard (startup report).

While in safe mode I check event log SYSTEM. What I find is this:

    Warning 11.06.2007 disk event 51 user I/T

    Warning 10.06.2007 Dhcp event 1003 user I/T

    Error sbp2port event 4 and 9 user I/T

    Warning 23.04.2007 W32Time event 36 user I/T

    And lately:

Error DCOM event 10005 user "myname"

Error Service Control Manager event 7026 and 7001 user I/T

    Under PROGRAM:

    Warning MsiInstaller 1015 and 11707 I/T

    Warning Userenv 1517 SYSTEM

    Warning WinMgmt 62 I/T

    Warning ASP.NET 1.1.4322.0 1020 I/T

    Probably does not mean anything.

I guess I try what we talked about earlier.

Run hdderase low level. Install XP on same or second hdd. Restore an image.

That will have to wait. I go to sleep now. Had no sleep for about 40 hours.

I'll be back to tell you.

    Thank you so much :)

Should you attempt to erase the seagate, use their utility or active's. Not too much at once tepe. Low level the samsung, reinstall, then image. Get some sleep first though, we'll look for answer's while you count .... sheep? :D

Yes both set as master. One primary master (OS-drive) and other as secondary master. Because both is SATA I think this is ok. But please correct me if Im wrong.

I know what BIOS is. As I can remember there were no need to setup anything there when installing new drive. I think I connected new where old one was. I asked 2 different people about this before installing. One friend of mine, and one person who own a small computer shop.

I have not removed any of my drives. My system is not running. As soon as I login XP it freeze. I can boot to safe mode. No freeze in safe mode. On boot I can enter BING and restore any image from both second int hdd and ext hdd. BING seem to work as it should. And is also a partition tool. All images freeze a minute after login XP.

I could remove Samsung hdd. But then I have no Windows XP. But of course I could restore an image from ext hdd to my second int hdd and see what happens. Only thing is I probably loose what is on the second int hdd.

Right now I use an old laptop I have borrowed from my stepfather. None of my post were sent from my desktop. I cannot do much with my desktop. But as I said it works from safe mode.

Cyberhawk or SSM is not on my system anymore. Not in my images.

I can go to msconfig from safe mode. But dont know what to disable.

    Thanks :)

But you see I cannot download anything to my desktop. I could download to the laptop Im using right now. If so I would have to move it from laptop to the desktop using an USB-stick. Would have to run my desktop from safe mode. Dont know if that will work. Maybe I try later.

But first I will enter msconfig and post here. Hope I'll be back soon.

But as soon as I click the mouse to start or shut down anything it freeze. Also freeze if I touch the keyboard.
