Install windows defender when his back is turned. It'll run in the background without him knowing and should help with those porn sites. Make sure the windows firewall is on. Also see if theres an antivirus that will run silently in the background. It will save you having to run to your bro's rescue when his computer craps out.

Why don't you point them to Eric Howes' anti-spyware tests?

I would point them at the tests, and when the system gets infected simply say to install a better anti-malware.

Respect his choice as a free individual he is. But also think to yourself the only way to learn is: THE HARD WAY. Period.

    Hey Cheater,

If he doesn't want any security, how about making backups?
A good image backup can get rid of a lot of problems.

    Hi Cheater !

I just want to say my opinion about this situation .

I completely agree with BigC that if he wants no protection , it is wrong but still his own right so let him do what he wants for now

Leave his computer with no protection (or what he installs) , he will soon be infected with something nasty , the computer will slow down , he could also lose some important data and only after that he will realize the risk and will ask you to help him protect his computer well .

Trust me , this is the onliest way you can make somebody understand this. I know of a person who didn't have any antivirus/antispyware on his computer , he didn't want to install any and after a year , the computer didn't want to start , the whole data was infteced with a virus(file infector) which we couldn't clean , the back-ups were also infected with the same virus so he worked 24 hours a day some moths and believe me , he is now very careful , he learnt more about firewalls, antivirus systems , updates the Windows very ofter and so on ;) ;) :thumb:

If you need an advise about cleaning something , just post :D :D

One thing to say, make sure your firewall is set to block file sharing, and all other computers on your network because now it is an untrusted network since your brother may has malware on his computer. Prevent it from spreading to your computer by opening up your mail in a sandbox, and putting your firewall on the highest security you can. Also, don't let him put any usb drives, floppys, cds, etc. into your comp unless you have scanned them.

    Cheers,

my firewall is on tight and he uses P2P networks. We both connect to the wireless router so i don't know how it will infect my computer.

As a loving/caring brother you should at least put some basic security on his computer. Just do it when his back is turned and he won't have a clue if he is not computer savvy at all. Prevention is better than cure.

Yeah PC-Cillin internet security is a very good program. I have had my sister using it for a couple of years now and its kept her out of trouble. If the computers specs are good it shouldn't interfere with its usage. However people have been complaining about its heavy resource usage which may not be good if the computer is going to be used for gaming.

you could just put prevx1 on in ABC mode. and then just hide the icon using the taskbar.

    You're right about that cheater.
How long do you figure it will be before you are asked to help clean this machine?
