    Worst than nothing.
With no AV, at least you are aware that you are in danger.

Very well said, at least with no AV you'd know you aren't safe and possible want to do a scan on your system with some offline or non realtime AV, with MSE, people tell me I haven't ever been infected and they're happy, run a scan on their system with a proper AV and it would show how heavily infected they were not even knowing it. Some people think that if they get a virus, the virus would pop up and say "hello I am a virus and your system is infected" but the truth is, they can be infected for a long time and not even know it.

I think you are going a bit too far. Worst than nothing? Not true, combined with Smart screen filter, UAC at max and a Limited user account, plus a good adblocker to block the tempting click-on ads and pop-ups, I think it is a pretty good security set-up.

    Several posts removed.

Let's not get too personal here about people's choice or opinions on an av.

Combined with X, plus W, paired with Z.
That's exactly what MS says re MSE.

I'm talking for a plain AV and how effective is. Without companions.....
    Simple as that.

I'm not saying it is the best AV but claiming it is worst than nothing is too far. And it is a bit funny how people here often selectively quote AV tests when it suits them but when they don't - they become biased or can't grasp the full splendor of their AV of choice. The fervor in protecting the favourite AV sometimes is almost fundamentalist.

I run MSE with MBAM and MBAE and it feels light and secure.

It would be even lighter and just as secure if you dumped the MSE and just ran MBAM and MBAE. I hope they don't have the same team working on MSE that has been producing this year's Windows Updates.

I don't run MSE anymore anyway.
Emsisoft Anti-Malware and MBAE real-time, and MBAM for the occasional on-demand scan.

    :)
But do you really think MBAM+MBAE would be enough?
    That's tempting.

Next Generation Malware Detection with Windows Defender
With Windows 10 we’re making substantial changes to Windows Defender to improve its detection capabilities, resilience from tampering, and it’s ability to recover systems from some of the most difficult to remove malware.

I don't want to be cynical, but isn't this what everyone else has been doing for few years already? I mean, essentially he just described a cloud system. Something MSE still doesn't have...
