Mozilla is talking about the "largest to-date public domain transcribed voice dataset." Translation: Over 14,000 people. In 18 languages. Of almost 1,400 hours (1,368 to be exact) of recorded voice. Welcome to an initiative dubbed Common Voice.
This is what the Mozilla announcement said, in the form of a blog on Thursday from George Roter.

Contributors to the project have professional specialties that range from doctoral candidates in speech recognition to machine learning scientists to a professor of computational linguistics. As such, the effort represents a global community of voice contributors along with what Mozilla credited as "passionate volunteers."

The purpose of Common Voice is to help teach machines how real people speak. In brief, it has evolved into a massive collection of voice clips in dozens of languages. What's next: The full dataset will be available for download on the Common Voice site.

Mozilla Common Voice is an initiative to "democratize and transform the voice recognition landscape". Started a few years back under the umbrella of the Mozilla Foundation and now partnered by Nvidia, the initiative allows volunteers to contribute to the world's largest open data voice dataset—the Common Voice Dataset—for speech synthesis and recognition software.

Today, the latest release of the Common Voice Dataset was made public. It brings several welcome additions to the table. Firstly, the corpus now has over 13,000 hours of crowd-sourced speech data.

Compared to the previous release, the latest release brings 4,622 hours' worth of fresh audio data. 16 new languages, namely Basaa, Slovak, Northern Kurdish, Bulgarian, Kazakh, Bashkir, Galician, Uyghur, Armenian, Belarusian, Urdu, Guarani, Serbian, Uzbek, Azerbaijani, and Hausa have been added as well.
This brings the total number of languages in the dataset up to 76. Overall, the dataset now has over 182,000 unique voices, a direct result of the 25% growth in the contributor community in the last six months.

Nvidia: NVIDIA and Mozilla Release Common Voice Dataset, Surpassing 13,000 Hours for the First Time

Common Voice is the world’s largest open data voice dataset and designed to democratize voice technology. It is used by researchers, academics, and developers around the world. Contributors mobilize their own communities to donate speech data to the MCV public database, which anyone can then use to train voice-enabled technology. As part of NVIDIA’s collaboration with Mozilla Common Voice, the models trained on this and other public datasets are made available for free via an open-source toolkit called NVIDIA NeMo.
