Adric, while they both seem the same, the ESR portable version is for users that were running just the ESR version before Mozilla decided to end support for Win7/8/8.1. Those of us who are still using those operating systems (Win7 64-bit for me), who can not run version 115, were switched to ESR automatically by Mozilla, thus the Legacy version from PortableApps to accommodate that switch. Same version, 2 different users.

Yes, but Mozilla is providing support via the ESR Branch. I have Win7 64-bit too with ESR 102. I did not need the legacy version to switch to 115. I don't understand "who can not run version 115" If someone wants 32-bit, then I understand.

Are you running PortableApps versions or installed Mozilla versions?

PortableApps. I don't do installs if I can avoid them.

Same here. So, you are running portable ESR 102 but have not updated to portable ESR 115.3.1, is that correct?

My "who can not run" statement means that my Win7 64-bit can not run present Mozilla version 118.0.1 (portable version), thus I need to run the Legacy portable version 115.3.1. And this is PortableApps' explanation:

"legacy" is a p-apps invention, not mozilla. see megabytes (mb) whats included in the portable, more means 32&64 bit. for mozilla v115 ESR is ESR, not more, not less. ESR targets its niche users or environments, not the common user. in case of win7/8 its the only version to run such OS, versions beyond do not include all code for such OS any longer. win7/8 compatible code is phased out, means it could result in crashes. even bugzilla is accepting tickets for such OS in a limited way, means - bugs are not fixed for win7/8, but for ESR. which means that ESR is not solely for win7/8.

v102 ESR has reached EOL, no more updates = vulnerable.

Yes I'm running 102 ESR, but also running 115.3.1 ESR (non-legacy) so I can update my userchrome.css for the things that no longer work.

Ok, the "who can not run version 115" is what confused me.

Usually when PortableApps does a legacy version, it's their last release for that product version, like with
    Thunderbird 102.15.1 and Firefox 102.15.1

Yes, in that case the legacy portable version will end Sep 2024, same as Mozilla version.

So the non-legacy ESR 115.4.* will no longer run on W7/8.1?

v115 ESR is the latest version of firefox for win7/8, until the bitter end in 2024, see table here.
    https://whattrainisitnow.com/calendar/
(btw @JRViejo - this calendar is more current)
it points out that the last 115 ESR build is release september 2024 and oktober the 1st its done, EOL, no more updates, no more fixes. after that date 115 ESR is to be considered as unsecure and users have to switch to another supported browser to retain browser security.
ESR always had 1 year plus 3 transitional builds

that way down mozilla is also constantly phasing out XUL elements, in fact since v117 it changes internal CSS to a more current form like stacked css for its internal html pages.

for me its quite clear that such end wont animate certain users to switch os, i am sure we have to deal with further questions, maybe for a fork.
