Minecraft is getting a free update that brings much-improved lighting and color to the game’s blocky graphics using real-time ray tracing running on Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics hardware. The new look is a dramatic change in the atmospherics of the game, and manages to be eerily realistic while retaining Minecraft’s pixelated charm.

The ray tracing tech will be available via a free update to the game on Windows 10 PCs, but it’ll only be accessible to players using an Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU, since that’s the only graphics hardware on the market that currently supports playing games with real-time ray tracing active.

If you've invested in a fancy graphics card capable of ray tracing, you may be somewhat disappointed by the dearth of actual content to show it all off. There's only so much you can play your way through Quake 2, no matter how much you like the musical strains of Sonic Mayhem.

It looks like Nvidia is aware of the problem, and a new job listing says it's going to do something about it. The company's Lightspeed Studios is on the hunt for a games producer to lead "an exciting new game remastering program," and it's all about ray tracing.
Actually, Nvidia is remaining completely tight-lipped about what games will be getting the remastering treatment, though the company has apparently decided on the first in line.

Well, Nvidia just released two videos explaining how ray-tracing is going to work in Minecraft. We still don’t have any release date for the same; however, it is still amazing to watch Nvidia going all in to build ray-tracing into the game.
The initiative by Nvidia is impressive because they’ll be building ray tracing in Minecraft layer by layer. It further means that the texture, lightning, shadows, details, and reflections in the game will be nothing short of extraordinary.

Minecraft fans have waited years for an official visual overhaul—something that retains the Mojang game's iconic, blocky aesthetic yet embraces next-gen visual flair. This wait has included both teases and failures to launch from the series' developers. This week, finally, the teases become a very, very pretty reality—at least, for those who can access it.

On Thursday, April 16, Mojang will release the Minecraft RTX Beta as a free update exclusively on Windows 10. As its name implies, this beta version of the game was co-developed with Nvidia, the makers of the RTX line of GeForce graphics cards, and as of press time, these cards are the only ones compatible with its hook into the current DirectX ray-tracing API, along with Nvidia's proprietary DLSS pipeline.
Every image and video in this article was provided by Nvidia and Microsoft, and members of the press were invited to test the Minecraft RTX Beta ahead of today's announcement. However, for now, we're forbidden from commenting any further on what we've played.

Minecraft's biggest-ever official visual overhaul, the Minecraft RTX Beta, is now live. It requires jumping through a few hoops, but as long as you own the game's Windows 10 "Bedrock" variant, you can dive in on PC without paying an additional penny.

Minecraft is pretty simple, and there’s not a whole lot going on visually — most enemies are blocks, and even 11 years ago the game could run on low-end computers. But the Dec. 8 update changes that by adding ray-traced lighting, as well as other helpful changes and fixes to the game.

Known as Minecraft with RTX, the ray tracing features in Minecraft have been available in beta form since April, and now they’ve finally come out of beta.
