Microsoft today announced that Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD), its Azure-based system for virtualizing the Windows and Office user experience it announced last September, is now generally available. Using WVD, enterprises can give their employees access to virtualized applications and remote desktops, including the ability to provide multi-session Windows 10 experiences, something that sets Microsoft’s own apart from that of other vendors who offer virtualized Windows desktops and applications.

In addition to making the service generally available, Microsoft is also rolling it out globally, whereas the preview was U.S.-only and the original plan was to slowly roll it out globally.
He also noted that Microsoft Teams is getting enhanced support in WVD with a significantly improved video conferencing experience.

Anderson also stressed that if a customer wants a multi-session Windows 10 environment in the cloud, WVD is the only way to go because that is the only way to get a license to do so. “We’ve built the operating system, we built the public cloud, so that combination is going to be unique and this gives us the ability to make sure that that Windows 10 experience is the absolute best on top of that public cloud,” he noted.

Microsoft Thursday disclosed forthcoming updates to its Windows Virtual Desktop offering that aim to bring improvements to deployment, management and security.

The move to work-from-home led usage of Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) to triple during the first three months of the year, CEO Satya Nadella during Microsoft’s earnings call Wednesday.
WVD aims to simplify the deployment of virtual desktops while providing a less expensive licensing model usage. Company executives and solution providers have touted Windows Virtual Desktop as a massive opportunity for the channel since its debut last fall.

On Thursday, Microsoft said that new capabilities coming to the platform should make WVD deployments even speedier. A new "administration experience" for WVD that's built into the Azure Portal is now in public preview, Microsoft executives said in a blog post.

"You can use this graphical interface to perform key tasks faster and more efficiently, like deploying and managing virtual desktops and apps, assigning users, and carrying out integrated monitoring and diagnostics," the company said in the post.
A number of new security features for WVD are now in public preview as well.

Earlier in May, Microsoft announced a few new features being made available to Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD). The enhancements were related to the management and deployment tools, an upgraded Teams experience, and more. Today, the company announced that it is making those features and improvements generally available.

As the name suggests, the Azure portal integration makes it easier for admins to manage and deploy apps and virtual desktops to users. This also brings security improvements, as admins can create Azure AD groups and mandate two-factor authentication.
Additionally, those that use the classic model for existing deployments will be soon provided with guidance on migrating to the new portal.

A/V redirect for Microsoft Teams
Once you enable A/V redirect in the Desktop client for Windows, the audio and video will be handled locally for Microsoft Teams calls and meetings.

As the name suggests, Azure Virtual Desktop allows users to run virtualized Windows instances in the cloud, allowing them to connect to them from virtually anywhere. Simply put, you can access your work files and applications remotely, not just from the office.

As for the novelties, Microsoft has announced improved support for Azure Active Directory (AAD), which will soon appear in the public preview. This means that in the future it will be possible to easily connect Azure Virtual Desktop VMs to AAD.
